Jere Bush Obituary

Jere Bruner Bush

RUSTON, LA - Jere Bruner Bush died on November 27, 2014, in Ruston, Louisiana. Born in Mineola, Texas, on February 27, 1944, he was the son of Haley and Fern Bruner Bush. During his early years in Mineola, Longview, and Shreveport, he grew up with close ties to a large extended family and frequent visits to grandparents. He developed an interest in people and a love of adventure. After graduating from LSU with a degree in electrical engineering, he made a career in electronics and sales, first with Collins Radio in Dallas, then with Western Telecommunications, Hewlett-Packard, and Agilent in Denver. A job transfer brought him back to Dallas.

With determination to live a full life after retirement, he made Gun Barrel City, Texas, a base for travel and other activities. He explored caves, visited American Indian archaeological sites, volunteered in the National Forest Service "Passport in Time" programs in many states, and spent summers in Yellowstone National Park. In new and widening circles he enlarged his appreciation of national treasures and made valued friendships. Declining health rarely dimmed his optimism and sense of humor.

He is survived by his sisters and their husbands, Beverly and Dan Patterson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Suzanne and Joe Rainer, of Ruston, and their children and grandchildren: Heather, Abby, and Alissa Boggs of Cary, North Carolina; Holly, Shaun, Emily and James O'Neill, of Jupiter, Florida; Stacie, Peter, Stephen, Timothy, Lydia, and Titus Dietsch of Midland, Texas; Shelley, John, Max, Oliver, and Evie Hinkle of Magnolia, Texas; and Haley, Dominik , and E. J. Holder of Gloster, Louisiana. He is also survived by numerous cousins and friends who have been among the brightest lights in his life.

His family wishes to thank the staff at The Alpine in Ruston for giving him attentive care and friendship and also Hospice of Caring Hearts.

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, December 3, at 10:30 a.m. in the Corinth Missionary Baptist Church near Timpson, Texas. Donations in his memory may be made to the Corinth Cemetery, Timpson Community Library, or Yellowstone National Park Visitors Center Fund.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www. kilpatrickfuneralhomes.com.

To the families of Jere, I would like to express my deepest sympathy at the passing of such a wonderful person. Jere dealt with his illness quietly, optimistically, and with very little complaining. When my father was faced with the same illness, Jere gave him suggestions, support, and even talked with my parents on the phone. We had many good times in Yellowstone, visiting while we waited for a big geyser to erupt or chatting over a campfire while sharing a good meal. Jere's positive outlook sometimes made me forget just what he was dealing with. He shared his passion for caving and archaeological digs with my son. He was a great friend and I am sure there is a new star twinkling up in the heavens.

I count myself lucky to have been a friend of Jere in high school, and also roommates for a couple of semesters at LSU. In 1969, Jere was best man at my wedding. He gave me and my wife the greatest wedding present I have ever seen... a small sculpture which we cherish to this day.
