I never got to meet Pap but wish that I had, having only spoken with him once on the phone. My sincere condolences to his surviving immediate family.

When Pap retired from The Times in 1979, Dave Ivey became the new cartoonist/illustrator for the newspaper. Then I came on in the fall of '79 to assist as a cartoonist as the paper began to increase its graphics output as a result of being a part of the Gannett chain (they were big into artwork in their papers). I never met Pap but I had seen his work ever since I was a boy in Minden and was very familiar with his style. When I was at The Times, I would occasionally come across an original work of his that had been stored in our art department deep in a file drawer.

The flag is now at half staff at his home in Colfax in honor of a man who should be an inspiration to us all to work hard, but do what you love, and do it with kindness and compassion. We will miss you, Uncle Allen.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Preston Allen (Pap) Dean, Jr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Pap. And to Pap it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Army. Pap, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Pap’s family and loved ones.
