Danny Mitchell Obituary

Pastor Danny Ray

Mitchell, Sr.

Pastor Danny Ray Mitchell, Sr., 69, of Shreveport, Louisiana entered peacefully into the heavenly gates of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 2, 2013.

Family Hour will be held Friday May 10, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at New Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church located at 2332 Jewella Avenue in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday May 11, 2013 at New Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church at 12:00 noon with Pastor J. L. Franklin of Lake Charles, Louisiana and Pastor Lee Benson of Edmond, Oklahoma officiating.

Pastor Mitchell will be laid to rest at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, Louisiana on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 11:30 a.m.

Pastor Mitchell was born August 23, 1943 to Willie Mae Mitchell and Cravon Reed in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was educated in Shreveport's public school system and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He continued his education at the University of Maryland with a degree of completion from Southern University in 1975. He also attended Shreveport Bible College from 1977 to 1978; United Theology Seminary 1981 to 1982; Baptist Christian College 1983 to 1984 and Moody Institute of Theology. In 1995, Pastor Murphy Hunt presented him with an honorary Doctorate degree from Louisiana Baptist University.

After returning home from the Air Force in 1968, he began working for Modern Clothing Store in downtown Shreveport. He utilized his business skills coupled with a great desire for entrepreneurship and purchased the store renaming it Modern Fine Men Clothing. He was the first black man to manage and own a clothing store in the city of Shreveport. He continued his entrepreneurship and in 1970 established the Jazz Workshop.

Pastor Mitchell received his call to the ministry in 1976. He ministered to people everywhere, including on the street corners in the city of Shreveport. In 1981, he became the Pastor of New Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where he ministered and served for 32 years.

Pastor Mitchell's desire was to change every person's heart and touch them in every aspect of their lives with the Good News of Jesus Christ. In addition to the love of GOD, Pastor Mitchell loved children. They were a joy in his life. His primary focus for children was their well-being, education, and knowledge of knowing and living in the Will of God.

The Lord opened another door of service allowing Pastor Mitchell the opportunity to serve eight years (1991 to 1999) as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing the constituents in the 2nd Congressional District. He took nothing for granted realizing that his voice in the Louisiana State Legislature was an extension of his voice in the church. During his eight years in office, he served on the Health and Welfare and Transportation Committees. He was also a member of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. Additionally, he served as Executive Officer of BSA Troop & Pack 53 NEMBC, he was a life member of the NAACP, and the Kiwanis.

Pastor Mitchell is preceded in death by his Mother Willie Mae Mitchell, Father Cravon Reed, Sisters Betty Jo and Willie Mae, Grandparents Ella and William Reed and Susie Davis, and Aunt Inez Madison.

Forever cherishing his memory: Loving and faithful wife, Yvonne Moore Mitchell of eleven years; Sons: Danny R. Mitchell, Jr. (Tameka) Shreveport, LA and Terrence Young (Reyna) Garland, TX. Daughters: Monica Green (Alpha) Killeen, TX; Carla Lincoln (Brett) Mesquite, TX; Danielle Woods (David) Panama City, FL and Tiffany Groover (Sheldon) Clarksville, TN. Sisters: Sadie Reed, Hazel Taylor Smith (Ron) and Eva Taylor Broadway (Fred) all of Shreveport, LA, Ann Howard, Goodlettsville, TN, and Ella Harmon, Los Angeles, CA.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Christus Schumpert Highland, Willis-Knighton Pierremont, and Regional Urology Oncology & Radiation Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Elizabeth Scholarship Fund in honor of Pastor Danny R. Mitchell, Sr.

Cancer Is So Limited.................

It cannot destroy confidence - It cannot kill friendship - It cannot shut out memories - It cannot silence courage,

It cannot invade the soul - It cannot reduce eternal life - It cannot quench the spirit,

It cannot lessen the power of the resurrection.

Daddy,
How do I begin to say how much I miss you? But in the midst of my aching heart there is a relief that soothes the aches away just when I think it can't hurt any worse. A relief in knowing that you don't have to suffer another single moment any longer. You were a strong man, with strong convictions in what you believed in and stood for. Some people didn't quite understand that about you, there was a time when I didn't either but I remember you always saying to me "You'll understand it better by and by." You were strong because you had to be, you had so many people looking to you for help, for the solution, for love and genuine care. Your life on this earth was not always easy but you took the hand that you were dealt and you sought for better for yourself and your family as best you could. You were a provider for your family as God commanded you to be and you had a heart for God's people. I've come to learn that true love is learning to love an imperfect person perfectly and you strived daily to do just that. You were a father & friend to many and you never forgot where the Lord brought you from. The Lord blessed you to accomplish many things for His glory throughout your life and even when illness attacked your body you fought as a true soldier in the army of the Lord. I'm thankful and honored that the Lord chose me to be your daughter. Since your transition, God has moved in the lives of our family and I know you are looking down smiling. I will continue to make you proud.(You know I loved to make you proud.) ? So I'll leave with the last words I said to you as you were transitioning to glory. I love you with my whole heart always have & always will; and I'm thankful that the Lord gave us to each other for these past 32 years of my life whether near or far the beauty of family is at the end of the day no matter what is or is not we will always be family and not even death can change that. So my Dear Daddy continue to "Sit down Servant and rest a little while!"

From the Heart of Your Baby Girl,

I want to send my heartfelt prayers and sympathy to Pastor Mitchell's wife, family, church family and friends. He was a spiritual son and great friend to our grandmother, Mother Odessa Manson, member of Avenue Baptist who passed away in 1982. Pastor Mitchell was there for us. Our grandma studied and prayed with him in those early years of his street ministries and was proud, as all of us were, of what he accomplished. She made it known that 'Danny' was her boy! Even though we were never members of his church, we still reached out to him and he made time to respond even years after our grandma passed away.

Just know that we thank you for sharing him with her and all of us and for all of the love and attention that he gave to so many. Well done my faithful brother, you were such a blessing to so many! God bless all of you and I pray that your wonderful memories of Pastor Mitchell brings smiles to your heart everyday. We will be praying with you always. The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pastor Danny Ray Mitchell, Sr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Pastor Mitchell. And to Pastor Mitchell it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Vietnam Wa while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Pastor Mitchell, we commend you for your honorable military and your pastorial service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
