Donald Scroggins Obituary

Maj Donald R. Scroggins, USA (RET.)

SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for Donald R. Scroggins will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2015 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel with Rev. Danny Nugent of North View Assembly of God and Rev. Krystopher Scroggins of the Assemblies of God World Missions officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Park with military honors. The family will be receiving friends for visitation on Friday, May 22, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald was a self-made man, born in Columbus, GA to Bennie and Bettie Scroggins. He graduated from Bossier High school in 1957 where he was an all-state athlete. He served 4 years in the Marine Corp, then served 17 years in the Army. His military career spanned from a master parachutist, in the 101st Airborne, to flying Helicopter Gunships for two tours in Vietnam, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross amongst many other honors before retiring at the rank of Major. He graduated from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS with a BA in business.

He was a proficient horseman who loved training and showing horses. He seemingly could build or fix anything with his hands. He was a man of strong convictions and great faith. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bennie Randell Scroggins and his sister Mary Dale Hutches. He is survived by his wife Kyle Ann Scroggins, sons Kelly Scroggins and Charles Frank Scroggins, grandchildren Stephanie Holcombe, Krystopher Scroggins and Steven Scroggins, 7 great grandchildren, sisters Joyce Van Brocklyn and Gale Dzvonick, brothers Roger D. Scroggins and Errol W. Scroggins and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.

What can I say about Donald? Such a wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. The class of Bossier High of 57 was blessed to have had Donald as one of our classmates. Memories that only we share and thank The Lord for them. We all love you Donald and we will see you again. I know you are playing football with some of our other friends who are in Heaven with you. The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Donald R. Scroggins our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Donald. And to Donald it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during his military career, including two tours in the Vietnam War while serving as a combat helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. Donald, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell.
