HAZEL BOLAND Obituary

BOLAND, HAZEL IRENE CHANDLER Sept. 21, 1913 to Sept. 20, 2010 Hazel Boland, 97, of Point Loma, was born in Flora, IL to Anna Bell Ellis and Clarence Chandler. Her family relocated to the San Fernando Valley when she was still a child. On Valentine's Day 1931, she met UCLA student Ernie Boland of Spearfish, SD on a blind date. The two married later that year. After the birth of Bernice, the family returned to Spearfish in 1934, where they spent five years and had another daughter, Barbara. Due partly to the South Dakota winters, the family returned to LA, where Ernie worked as an accountant and Hazel briefly served as a telephone operator. On December 7th, 1941, she watched the switchboard light up her dark office "bright as day" following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The family spent the war in LA and also welcomed the birth of three more daughters (Marilynn, Carol, and Kathy). Upon Ernie's appointment as Finance Director of Public Works for San Diego County in 1947, the Bolands relocated to Point Loma. Besides raising her five girls and rooting for UCLA sports, Hazel served as District Manager for the San Diego City Schools Cafeterias for over a decade, retiring in 1976 soon after Ernie left his job with the County. The Bolands enjoyed their years of Masonic affiliations, with Hazel rising to Worthy Matron of the Point Loma Chapter of Eastern Star. The couple also travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and South America. Hazel cared for Ernie during a long illness that ended in 1997. Sharp to the last, this self-styled "tough old bird" spent her later years in the company of her family, still in the little white house on Wildwood Road she had called home for sixty-three years. She is survived by her five daughters, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Services will be held at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 4th. Memorials may be made to George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Center, 3702 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.
