ALAN HARDTARFER Obituary

HARDTARFER, ALAN E. August 1, 1941 to January 3, 2010 "This is Air Force One, carrying Henry Kissinger, do not fire." After hearing these words, LCDR Alan Hardtarfer, the Air Picture Officer on the USS Jouett in the Tonkin Gulf during the latter days of the Vietnam war, took his finger off the firing button thereby narrowly avoiding his fifteen minutes of fame. Dr. Kissinger was flying to North Vietnam to negotiate for release of the POWs and the pilots had neglected to transmit the proper ID codes to identify the plane. When Alan, following protocol, tuned the ship's radar to sight a missile on the "unidentified contact," Air Force One's electronic counter measures board "lit up like a Christmas tree" and prompted the pilots to quickly correct their actions. Alan, a longtime San Diego resident, born in Kansas City, Missouri , August 1, 1941, died January 3, 2010, at home in San Diego from congestive heart failure due to diabetic complications. He considered himself a Kansan, graduating from the University of Kansas in 1964 with a degree in international relations, on a Navy ROTC scholarship. After graduation he had a very successful but short career as an accomplished "ship driver" in the Navy earning multiple honors including the Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals. After "resigning his commission" in the early 70's, he used his GI bill to go to SDSU and just kept going and going. Eventually, he had nearly enough credits for a Doctorate but didn't even officially get his Masters because he never completed his thesis due to being hired by the City of San Diego. Alan retired as a Senior Management Analyst in 1999, due to increasing health problems, married for the first time at age 58 and settled down in Mission Hills. (SDU-T Passages, October 15, 2006). Alan played offensive left tackle for the Lawrence High School football team ('57-'59), a team nationally recognized by Life Magazine for a record string of games won and still bore the scar on his hand where early Charger quarterback John Hadl's cleat punctured it during a high school game play. Last September he was able to travel back to Lawrence for their 50th reunion. Until his health precluded it, Alan was very active in civic and Catholic organizations: Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Confirmation Instructor, Lay Pastor, San Diego City Retired Employees Assoc., and the California Women in Government Assoc. (CWIG). Alan, known and admired for his cheerfulness and stoicism in the face of mounting physical disabilities, will be remembered by his many friends and family at a memorial service at St. Vincent de Paul Church on Friday, January 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Janet Cooper, his 97 year old mother, Margaret and sister, AnnMarie (Jim) Wills of Colorado and a nephew, Brian (Anne) Vermillion of California. He also leaves a grandniece, Katie and grandnephew, Jacob also of California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St . Vincent de Paul School Scholarship Fund, 4077 Ibis St., San Diego, CA 92103.

Dear Janet--I was saddened and surprised to learn of Alan's passing.
I knew his health issues were serious after visiting with both of you at our 50th Reunion here in Lawrence, but didn't expect his passing so soon. I am aware that you made special arrangements to be here including the dialysis trip to Topeka. You could tell that Alan adored you and so much appreciated all that you did for him. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. May God's love surround and protect you.
Sincerely, Karen Stuart Heeb

Dear Mrs Hardtarfer & Family,

It is with a very heavy heart filled with grief to learn of Alan's passing. Although, I know he is Home with our Lord he is missed here. I am a former teammate of his and marveled how he was such a terrfic hard hitting football player on the field but such a gentle and friendly person off the field. I remember Coach Woolard once telling our team that Alan was a model of what sportsmanship is about. I thank the Lord that I was able to see him at our class reunion and even then he amazed me with his happy demeanor as he sat in his wheel chair chatting with all those crowded around him.

Vaya Con Dios Armano,

Su Amigo,

I am saddened to hear of Alan's passing. Everyone here in Lawrence, Kansas that attended our 50 year high school reunion last fall was so happy to see Alan. His zest for life remained as we remembered him from our high school days. What a great life he enjoyed!

Dear Janet, I am so saddened by Alan's death. He was always my very favorite male cousin. We had many good times with our families while Uncle Cliff was alive; playing board games and cards. We were blessed with a great family Alan and I. I am so glad he found love with you so that his last years on this earth were spent with someone he loved and loved him. Mary Ann Keller

I am Alan's cousin from Chanute, KS and have very fond memories of him. My mother Clara Lewis was Margaret's sister, she passed away several years ago. My older sisters Mary Ann Keller and Marge LaRue still live in Parsons. I would like to offer my deepest sympathies on Alan's passing.

Dear Janet, I am truly sad to hear about Alan's death. He was a fellow Jayhawk, and I really liked him and was sooo happy you two found each other. I wish I could be there for the service on Friday, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you. Hope to see you next time I'm in San Diego. My mom with dementia lives with me, and it's hard to get away. Hope you and Pat can come visit me in Utah. I'm sure Alan had a longer and better life from being with you. Love, Marilyn Schwartz --Pat Berry told me the sad news.

I have known Janet for 20 yrs since our reserve units were activated for Desert Shield/Storm. I have never known her be as happy as she has been since meeting Alan. She glowed as she walked down the aisle for their wedding vows. These past ten years have undoubtly been the happiest of their lives w/- their constant companionship and devotion to each other. He will be greatly missed.

1980s - Alan and his work family

I am so sad that the world has lost this wonderful man. In 1980, Alan gave me my first job in San Diego. He was more often than not more of big brother to the people who worked for him than he was a boss. He cared for all of us and helped many of us in special ways as he did for so many other throughout his life. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone, and, no matter what he was going through himself, he always had a big contagious smile on his face & a cheery word to share. I am so happy that he found Janet and was blessed with such a happy marriage with such a lovely lady for the last years of his life. My heart goes out to Janet, Alan's mother and family.
