ALICE GOEHRING Obituary

GOEHRING, ALICE MARY Alice Mary Goehring, beloved wife and mother, passed away on September 4, 2010 at the age of 71. Alice will be greatly missed by her husband of 47 years, Charles A. Goehring; her son, Charles E. Goehring, Ph.D. (Chuck), daughter-in-law, Sarah, and her grandchildren, Cash and McKenzie, all of San Diego; her sister, Eva Marie Strock of Novato, CA; and her beloved cat, Tibby. Born in New York City on November 8, 1938, to Clifford and Alice Mae Strock, Alice grew up on Long Island. She earned a degree in technical writing from Purdue University and began a long and skilled career as a highly esteemed editor of college and graduate-level textbooks, working first in New York City. In 1963, Alice married Charles Goehring in a small ceremony at Amityville, NY, and in 1963 the couple relocated to Novato, where she continued her publishing work. Alice retired from her full-time work in 1971 to focus her time and attention on raising her son, and especially enjoyed attending his soccer and baseball games. During this time and for an additional 31 years she continued her editorial work on a freelance basis, being employed by East Coast and Bay Area publishers. In 1990, Alice and Charles moved from the Bay Area to La Jolla, San Diego, and enjoyed their time being closer to their son, at the time a student at UCSD. They then moved to Chula Vista. Alice enjoyed bowling, reading, shopping, and spending time with her family. Alice could always be found front and center at her grandchildren's birthday parties and loved a family get-together or holiday celebration. She was known for her quick wit and was always favored to win a family round of Trivial Pursuit! Alice was very involved with her homeowners association, most recently as the President of the Board of Directors of Bolero at Rancho Del Rey. A private family gathering will be held in her memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The San Diego Zoological Society, Attn: San Diego Zoo Memorial, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112-0551; the Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS), P.O. Box 8375, La Jolla, CA 92038; or The Salvation Army.

Dear Goehrings: we share your loss of a great lady and mother, and a good friend. We all moved into Romero Court in 1968 when "Chuck" was just a little guy. Having the Goehrings as neighbors was an honor and a delight.
Alice will be missed, she holds a warm spot in our family's heart.

Alice was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority at Purdue Unuversuty. We shared many memorable times together. I was maid of honor at her wedding. She was Godmother to my olderst daughter, Lori. I not only lost a school chum, sorority sister, but a true friend. My heart goes out to her family.
