CLEO HOGGAN Obituary

HOGGAN, CLEO MATTHEWS 1917 to October 6, 2010 Cleo Matthews Hoggan (92) quietly returned home to her Heavenly Father on October 6, 2010, after a long and productive life. She was born in Ashurst, AZ in 1917 to John Ivan Matthews and Alta Meleta Stapley. Her early years were spent in Graham County, AZ with siblings Charles and Mary. Her family moved to the Phoenix area where brothers Verl and John were born. Cleo's teen years were spent in Phoenix where she graduated from Phoenix Union High School. Cleo was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), where she participated in many of its social activities and there met Bruce Walter Hoggan. They were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on February 2, 1938. The two of them became great dancing partners and even won local dance contests. They were married for over 67 years when Bruce passed away on August 26, 2005. From 1938 to 1960 Bruce and Cleo resided in Phoenix where all six of their children were born. In 1960 the family moved to San Diego, CA. Cleo learned her organizational skills from the various callings she fulfilled in the Church, and as a working mother. She served as Relief Society President, in multiple teaching assignments and as the Ward organist for many years. Talented in so many ways, Cleo also sewed dresses for her daughters and made costumes for the children. She had excellent business skills and loved to sing and dance. Cleo was a voracious reader and loved education. From 1960 to 1964, Bruce and Cleo lived on Point Loma in San Diego. Because of Cleo's new employment in Rancho Santa Fe as a legal secretary, the family moved to Solana Beach in 1964. Cleo left the legal profession after a few years and went to work for the University of California at San Diego. After she retired, she and Bruce served an 18 month LDS mission to Columbia, SC. Cleo completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in World History in UCSD in 1987 at age 69. Cleo loved to chat with her grandchidlren to find out what their future plans were and to encourage them on to loftier goals. She is survived by her six children: Michael; David and wife Florence; Philip and wife Beth; Paula; George and wife Janice; Janine; 32 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Escondido Stake Center, 1917 E. Washington Ave., Escondido, CA. Interment will be in Phoenix at the Greenwood Memorial Lawn Mortuary on Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m.

I found a copy of Out of Africa from 1938 that had her signature. I bought it at a thrift store in San Diego. It's amazing the life she has lived! I am originally from Utah and a member of the LDS Church also.

To the loved ones of Aunt Cleo, she always had a warm hand and a loving heart to share. She will remembered that way by us and ours. All our love and memories of her will always be treasured. Kelly and Joyce Crook and Family in Taylorsville, Utah
