I met David when he first moved to San Diego from Detroit. It was about 1973 and we spent an afternoon on the sailboat of a mutual friend, Lou Perez. Sailing and drinking cheap wine does not always a good combination make, but I thought I could handle it. How embarrassing, and what a poor first impression I must have made! Regardless, David and I kept in touch and had fun times and mutual friends in the years that followed. Both Cancers, and only two years apart in age we both enjoyed a good time -- be it a day at the beach or a Halloween party. David threw a few of those, and he was an excellent host. I always assumed we would both grow old and kebbitz about old man issues when we ran into each other. But it was not to be that way. Although I never got to meet his family, I hope they know that he was a well-liked guy who many people considered a friend.
