To the family of Gary: No words or deeds can express my sympathy to you. He was a sincere, gracious and helpful man and I thank God I knew him. I pray the Lord has him close and will send him back to you as a guardian angel.

After a wonderful service on Wednesday, Diane mentioned she wished I would have read a prayer/letter I read to Gary before he left us. I'd like to share it with you now:

Dear God in Heaven,
Thank you for Gary Jenkins, and for the 72 years he’s been in this world. Time that permitted him to become a son, brother, husband, father, grandpa, uncle, cousin and friend. Time to meet his beautiful wife Diane, have four wonderful children and become a grandfather of ten sweet grand-children. We have all been blessed by having him in our lives!
He was always happy to help anyone out, particularly if in need of his advice. And he always brought along his sense of humor, which happened to be passed on to ALL of his children (Gary Jr. and Lee in particular). Our lives have all been changed because of Gary.
Thank you God for taking care of him in these very moments, and during the time he goes to live with you forever. We know everyone and everything ultimately belongs to you. We look forward to the day we can be together with you in heaven, as a complete family again. Free from pain and sadness. Please give us all strength through this. And help us to keep our eyes and faith on you God.
Thank you Jesus,
Amen

48 years in a single marriage is a remarkable accomplishment these days and but one insight to the type of man Gary was. He was not shy about his huge pride for his family, heritage, or work. He was one of the most dedicated and honorable people I have ever know and it was my great pleasure to have had the chance to work with him over the last 15 years. Knowing he has a great family that is there for each other helps ease my pain. Gary is missed dearly but not forgotten.

Gary was such a tremendous presence at work, and was as much a friend as he was a co-worker. We all loved Gary, and miss him more than words can say. It's so quiet without his loud laugh, his funny jokes (usually Irish) and his paternal presence in all of our lives. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his beloved wife Diane, and the rest of the family that he loved so much. May you rest in peace, our favorite Irishman.

We will miss you Gary... our memories go back to Detroit in the early 40s. You, Diane and Marlene and Eddie are our dear cousins. It's so consoling that we kept in touch through the years and shared a wonderful trip to Alaska. Our love to your family.

I had a chance to work with your father this past year. I live in Brighton Michigan. Gary and I would talk about the area that he knew well and I felt he was going back in time as he would tell me the stories and where to go for dinner and what not to miss. We even made plans to have dinner one day when he made it back to town.

The last we spoke he went on and on about the Elks and I was sure he was out to drive membership.

I really enjoyed your dad and I know I will miss him even after knowing him for just a few months as our business lives crossed paths.
