JAMES JULSON Obituary

JULSON, JAMES GEORGE James George Julson died December 4, 2010 at the age of 74, at his home in Sisters, Oregon. Jim was born and raised in San Diego, California and went to Hoover High. Soon after he became involved in drag racing at Paradise Mesa drag strip. Little did he know that racing would be a huge part of his life. In 1955, he would meet the love of his life, Lucille, and they wed a year later and have two children, Mike and Sharon. He worked for 22 years at North Island Naval Station. In 1975, he founded Jimco Racing Products and built off-road race cars until he retired in 1990. Whether it was a race car, custom boat or Jim and Lucy's dream home in Oregon, Jim did it all with his own two hands. Up to the time of his death he was always building something either furniture for the house or a dining room table for one of the kids. He loved his kids and grandchildren more than life itself. Over the years, he rode dirt bikes, raced cars, played golf, loved to fish and traveling with Lucy anywhere and everywhere. He is survived by his wife Lucille, his son Mike and wife Jan, his daughter Sharon and husband Dave Collins, his father Lyle Julson, his grandchildren Christine, Jimmy, Tiffany, Tim, Matt, and Lauren, and seven great-grandchildren. Services are pending.

To the whole Julson family. I am proud to say I know you and consider you all friends. I am very honored to say I knew and met Jim many times in the past. As a young kid I remember going to the original shop in Lakeside with my grandfather. I dont know if Jim ever knew or realized what an influence he has had on the sport of off-road racing. I cant imagine what racing without Jimco would be like today. Jim has left a huge impact on the sport and Jim's son Mike has continued to make Jimco the #1 builders in our sport around the world.

Can you imagine what Jim and his old friend Jack are coming up with now? There will probably be a whole new set of pearly gates waiting for the rest of us!

God Speed Jim!

Jim was one of the greatest men I've ever known, let alone probably the best grandfather in the world atleast in my opinion, but hey I'm a little bias. He taught me so many things like fishing and photography and some of my fondest memories were with him. He'll be missed by a lot of people.

Jim & I worked together in the Lofting Section at Convair in 1958/1959. I remember we went bow hunting in Kaibab Nat'l Forest, Arizona somewhere in there. As I recall, Jim was the only guy to get a deer Such fun !! Later we both worked at the Depot @ NI, but never in the same areas.

My prayers go out to his family.

It is with deep sorrow that we learn of Jim's passing. But remembering Jim brings to mind all the great times we had camping out at Ocotillo Wells back in the 70s, playing in the dirt, sitting at the campfire at the end of the day, telling stories and jokes. He was a great guy, a friend and mentor to so many.

Jim was a vibrant spirit and we hope Lucy and the family continue to feel his loving presence in their hearts and thoughts now at this sad time and always.

The guy standing in front of me in the employment line at NAS North Island that early November morning in 1952 lit up a cigarette and offered me one too; it was a Camel … I took it … saying thanks to my new friend, Jim Julson. We became much closer over our next four years of apprenticeship, working and schooling together to become journeymen mechanics. Jim’s mechanical drawing and drafting ability far exceeded the rest of us … so he followed his skills in that direction … good for him and good for the Navy and national defense.
.
Our friendship went beyond the workplace into the unimaginable world of UCT and international brotherhood. Again, Jim and I learned and worked together. He was one of the best brothers I ever had … much joy we shared … good for us and good for the world of peace.
.
I missed Jim’s world of race cars but I watched from the fringe, always admiring his dedication and achievements. The footsteps he left for his children to follow are straightforward to success and happiness … good for Jim and good for his family. God bless the family.
.
I miss Jim now that he is gone … but those fond memories of our earlier days will never leave.

My condolences go out to Lucy, Mike, Sharon and all the family. We met the Julsons when we went camping in Ocotillo Wells in 1970. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and extraordinary friend to everyone.

I was fortunate enough to meet Jim in just a few brief encounters in the last few years, and although I didn't get to know him well in those encounters, his son Mike and my co-worker Steve both speak often of him and what an exceptional man he was. Jim was undoubtedly a huge influence in Mike's life, and helped Mike become the great success he is today. Without Jim's great company, I would have missed out on many great projects, immense knowledge, and life-long friends. His passing marked a very sad day at Jimco, but his creativity, genuine concern for customers, and pride in his work will live on in each of us who are fortunate enough to call Jimco our home away from home. My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and his loved ones. Thank you Jim for all the good things that you've afforded me!
