Dear Jerry,

It's such a pleasure to receive this reminder. And also, I appreciate to give me an opportunity to see a message from my colleagues from the Spot in La Jolla.
I was so please to hear from Mike Townsend mentioning individual names what I worked with at the Spot.
Jerry, I become older every day, but I thank you what you did for me every morning and evening.

When I met you when I was about my mid 20's, but here I am. I will be about my 60's in a few years.

I must thank you again to meet you and my old friends at the Spot in La Jolla which you established.

Respectfully,

Yasu Eguchi (a.k.a, Lerory) from Japan.

Toughest boss I ever had. Never worked so hard or under so much stress. But I survived and maybe that was the point of it all. Many memories of coworkers from 1991 to 1996 including Dee, Dan, Dan, John, Eric (#38), Vinnie, Jerry, Karen, Barbara, Kelly, Jocelyn, Linda, Diane, David #11), Paul, Jennifer x2, Ronit, Theo, Patricio, Alejandro, Chewy, Dong, Nagi, John (mgr), Dan (mgr), Dale, Mary x 2, Jeanne, Todd, Patrick, Kevin, Chris, Jo, and so many others - but of course Yasu too! Hope you all are doing very well and thriving. He´d be happy about that.

Great boss! I learned a lot working for Jerry in the 90s at The Spot. It was my 1st hostess/waiting job alongside SDSU friends- Tina, Kirsten & Jenni. Jerry ran a tough ship but always told me, "you´re a good kid". Thanks Jerry & Eileen!

I received an email from legacy today that it was the anniversary of Jerry´s passing, nearly 15 years ago. It bright back so many memories of Jerry (and Eileen). I worked for him as a hostess (!) for many years during the 80´s. I was in my 20´s. I learned a lot from working there and from Jerry´s example. Many of the people I knew there have also passed, including Alan Fields and Debbie Grainger. Anyway Jerry treated me very very well and it was fun to see him running his very tight ship. He was gruff with a huge heart. Hugs to anyone else who sees this today. Susan Patterson Leary

A little late, but I worked for Jerry (with Gene Olson below, Alan Fields, Debbie Grainger and so many memorable others.). Jerry was a fine restauranteur and a great boss. The firings Gene speaks of are almost comical events by today’s standards. He had such a HUGE heart. He was a lovely man and I’ve never known anyone quite like him. I’m sorry for your loss, Eileen. He was one of a kind.

Best boss I ever had. Worked for Jerry at The Village Cupboard. What a great guy!

I had the privelege of working for Jerry as a bartender at the Spot, La Jolla in the mid-late 80's. Jerry was already a local legend and I learned a lot about life and running a business from watching Jerry run the Spot. It was always a tight ship, as it had to be, and that was no easy task in the bar and restaurant business in the 80's. The lessons I learned from those days are still of great value to me.
RIP Jerry, you were a great man with a kind and generous heart, thanks for always showing that side of yourself to me. Forever your friend, Yamo

I can still remember
When the Village Cupboard lost it's name
To a couple who took a chance in life
And it would never be the same.

I was a mere acquaintance
Through a job I hated more
But they were there and gave to me
New avenues to explore.

They treated me with kindness
And if I was to go out
I was in a safe SPOT you see
Of that there was no doubt.

My visits became far and few
But I could always just show up
I'd be given a table front and center
They'd always fill my cup.

It's been about 30 years you see
My son is now a man
But those brunches were extra special
When my life alone began.

Eileen and Jerry may not remember
But I know I always will
They remained friendly faces
When the road was all uphill.

Bird Rock, Steve and Poverty Sucks
Were another place in time
Rest In Peace and farewell my friend
A memory and a friend of mine.

From the girl who lived on the "other side of I-5". J... you told me I was too nice a girl. Lol...thanks for the advice. I came home

We will always remember Jerry, Big Bird, as he was know on the docks at Silver Gate Yacht Club. He always had a smile on his face and ready to lend a helping hand to whoever needed one. Jerry you will be missed.

Dear Eileen (and Meany too) - Having both been widowed (BJ twice) we know exactly how you feel. It will heal, but slowly, and with one so dynamic as Jerry you will never forget him- - Neither will we, we loved him for the nice guy he was to us. Memories fade but life goes on, and so must you. Keep the faith, baby... Warren and BJ Smith

I know you're somewhere overseeing what people have to say, so here's to you, my old friend and boss. Sure, you fired me at least five times, but you always had the good sense to hire me back, and over the years you were always gracious and kind whenever I stopped into The Spot.

You established and ran one of the best restaurant/bars, not only in La Jolla, but in all of San Diego, and you will be missed.

I woke up this morning thinking of Jerry. I worked for Jerry over 12 years ago and handn't seen him in about 10 years. I was a punk kid when wandered through his doors but left a man with amazing life lessons. I do not give a seminar or do a consulting project without referering to the amazing lessons I learned from Jerry. So, this morning when I awoke with him on my mind, you can imagine my suprise when I googled his name to find out the news. I can't say enough about what Jerry taught me. The attention to detail and how much he cared about people, in his unique way, is something I will aspire to achieve in my life. My heart goes out Eileen, his childrenand his friends. My thanks go out to "The Man from La Mancha"! You will live in my heart and mind forever! Thank you for everything...

Dear Jerry

I am deeply grateful to you for what you have done for me. And, I'm sorry for being able to invite you to Japan to repay my debt of gratitude to you when you were alive. I remember sometimes the day I ran into you first time back alley at the Spot almost 20 years ago when I went to your restraunt to apply a job. Then, you gave me a chance even though I couldn't speak English that much. Since then, I was a just your employee, yet you treated me with incredible generosity and love.
And when I was seek a new career, you were so supportive and became a reference for me with extraordinary complement in my resume.

Lastly, I have a lot of respect to you because you lived with your principle, and you were a guy with an attitude of "The buck stops here". There is a Japanese saying "Children learn from their father's back" I must say "I think I learned a quite a bit from your back more than my biological one. Absolutely, you were my second father.

from your son, Yasu Eguchi in Japan.

Dear Eileen

My hearts goes out to you in your time of sorrow. At the same time, I truly appreciate you notified me what happened to Jerry.

Love,

Yasu Eguchi

Dear Jerry if you can read this, thank you for everything, the world just isn't the same with out you.  Love, Stephen Herman.

Eileen,
My sincere sympathy to you and the family. I had the pleasure of dping business with Jerry at the Spot selling him wine and spirits. We would meet every Monday morning, go through orders and then chat for 30 minutes outside.
He was so good to me! Yea, he ranted and raved and was very demanding and as he was generous and had a big heart . I respected him so much because he was a standup guy and you always knew where you stood with him. One of the best things of all is that I met my wife Diane at the Spot as she sold food to him
I learned so much from him and I will miss him dearly especially our Monday morning talks about life, family, and business

God bless you Jerry!

With Warmest Regards,
Mike & Diane Sheetz

Eileen,
Heartfelt sympathy is extended to you and immediate family in the passing of a very fine gentleman. I had the privilege of knowing Jerry through SGYC, and he very graciously took his grand boat out to assist me in the scattering of the ashes of a dear friend from Kona Kai Yacht club. He will be deeply missed by many in all walks of life, but none more so than his many friends and "buddies" at the yacht club. Smooth sailing Jerry and God bless. Respectfully Margaret Ava Cook

Jerry, from a former employee, you were one of the most marvelously cantankerous and irascible people I've ever known. You alternated between incredible generosity and misery-inducing rants, but under it all the only thing you really wanted was the customer to be taken care of in your way. It was tough, very tough to measure up. Missed you after you sold the Spot, it really lost it's singular appeal...which was you. Thanks for the jobs when I needed them, I'll never forget that.

Dear Uncle Grouchy,

I’m so happy your brother Leonard and I made it out from New York to see you last month. We came to cheer you up but even in the hospital bed you took care of us, telling us where to go for good meal. And of course you were right. You and Eileen have been a huge influence on me since I first met you when you both opened your hearts and home to a silly adolescent whom you had never met so many years ago. It was the best summer of my life. It’s hard when I think I won’t see you again. You are terribly missed.

Your Nephew,
Allan Herman

Rebecca and I met Jerry through mutual friends Nancy and Irwin, and spent many enjoyable hours with him during trips to La Jolla. He was always fun to be with, gracious with his time, stories and relaxing sails on SD Harbor. Though we didn't know him well, it was easy to see he was one-of-a-kind and will be missed by many, including Rebecca and me.

November 2, 2010

Jerry you are missed already. We looked forward to talking with you when we came to San Diego and Silver Gate. You will be remembered for all the good you've done others and the smiles you've brought to our lives - Bob and Karen O'Hara

Jerry Herman was the original owner of The Spot Restaurant, the locals' favorite hangout in La Jolla. He loved activity. He also brokered exotic cars, and boat mattresses. He was the go-to guy to get things fixed or taken care of. He was a gentleman, a wonderful raconteur of fascinating stories with his deep voice and 'yup-yup's,' and his trademark thumb rotation at warp speed. He was one of a kind. He had a good soul. He was more than a friend. He was like family.
