JOE ADKINS Obituary

ADKINS, JOE DEAN Captain Joe Dean Adkins, USN (ret.) was an extraordinary son, husband, father, Navy pilot, friend, lawyer, stepfather, and Optimist. He died on September 10, 2010. He was born on June 5, 1925 in Marlow, Oklahoma to Jesse Henry Adkins and Mabel Mae Williams Adkins. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and began a very distinguished career. While in the Navy he obtained a BS degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Masters Degree from George Washington University. He served with distinction as a carrier pilot in Korea and Vietnam. Among his many service accomplishments were over 500 aircraft carrier landings, command of three squadrons, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery, and being Air Operations officer for the USS Forrestal. Joe married Carol Lucille Sawyer in 1947, and they had many happy years together while traveling with the Navy. They were very proud of their four children: Nanette, Suzanne, Andrew, and Thomas. In 1977, Carol passed away. Joe immersed himself in California Western School of Law, graduating in 1979, and later practiced law in Coronado. In December 1978, Joe married Mary Lou Avery Greer. They lived in Coronado, enjoying community events, volunteer activities, and traveling. Joe became active in the Coronado Optimist Club, and later, in recognition of his skills, he was elected Vice-President of Optimist International. Joe is survived by Mary Lou, his loving wife of 31 years, and his four children: Nanette and and husband David Tomsky of North Carolina, Suzanne and husband Craig Clarke of Coronado, Andrew Adkins of Los Angeles, and Thomas and spouse Lisa Adkins of Coronado. Joe is also survived by Mary Lou's children, who regarded him as a father: Bill and spouse Carol Greer of Portland, Oregon, David and spouse Kiyoko Greer of Kochi City, Japan, Nancy and husband Larry Baird of Oregon City, Oregon, and Deborah and husband Randon Walker of Ridgefield, Washington. Joe was also a beloved grandfather and great-grandfather. As Captain Adkins preferred, no funeral or open memorial service is planned. To memorialize him, the family recommends donations to the Alzheimer's Association of San Diego and the Optimist Club of Coronado.

Joe was my step-father, but his presence in my life was of a duration longer than my biological father. The two men were friends in WWII and I was blessed to have each of them in my life. Joe's wisdom guided me through difficult times. His love for me, a young adult step-child when I entered his life, was unconditional. I loved him as though he were my own father. I will cherish him in my heart for the rest of my days.
