KATE BROGAN-DIBOS Obituary

BROGAN-DIBOS, KATE Kate Brogan-Dibos, award-winning educator and wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted friend, passed away on June 11, 2011, after a heroic year-long battle with cancer. Born in San Diego on December 16, 1947, Kate was a North Park girl, attending grade school at St. Patrick's. The daughter of two educators, Dorris and Harold Brogan, she earned her teaching credential from San Diego State University after graduating from Our Lady of Peace, and joined the faculty first at Santana High School, then at the newly opened Valhalla High School in East County. One of Valhalla's original faculty members, she helped shape a generation of young people, retiring in 2009 after a distinguished career in which she earned a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from National University and a Golden Apple Award for Teacher of the Year in 1997. An inspirational figure in the classroom who was passionate, innovative, and a tireless advocate for and champion of her students, Kate is remembered as an adored and respected teacher and colleague. But Kate's greatest legacy is the love she lavished upon her family and friends. She was the tall pole lifting a billowing tent under which many gathered. Unfailingly generous, strong, determined, courageous, and kind, she had an instinctual gift for motherhood, a rare talent for friendships, and enjoyed a great love affair with life. She married Jerome Dibos, also of North Park, in 1982. They would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary this summer. Her loss is felt greatly by her surviving children, Bob Skinner, Amy Finley, Casey Ryan, and Diane, Erin, Michael, and Yvette Dibos, and her grandchildren Jack, Nick, and Lily Skinner, Indiana and Scarlett Schaefer, Finley and Liam Ryan, and Lilah Dibos. She is missed by her sister and brother, Rosemary and Michael Brogan, her many sisters- and brothers-in-law, and all their families. A woman like Kate leaves behind a great, gaping hole in the universe, but her spirit informs those who loved her to enjoy, as she called them, the Halcyon Days. A memorial mass and reception will be held Friday, June 17, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church in El Cajon. In lieu of flowers, Kate suggested donations be contributed to The Lois Merrill Foundation, who helped with medical cost during her treatment or to San Diego Hospice, who compassionately cared for her during her final days.

God bless you, my wonderful teacher. You brought laughter and wisdom into my troubled teenage life, and yours is the voice I still hear, sixteen years later, when I remember your lessons on marriage and children. It gives me some small comfort to know that you passed on the same day as my dad. He's heard so much about you through the years. I believe you are both in heaven now, and that you are making him laugh. Class of '95.

What a wonderful life Kathy (I knew her as Kathy) had - we enjoyed some really fun times going to Laguna Beach after our highschool days...she always brought laughter and a joyous spirit and will light the heavens with her beautiful soul. I always felt that to be born a child of Kathy's would indeed be the BEST!!! My love and prayers to her family.

Bless your family at this time. I've been looking at my old Santana yearbooks since reading the notice in the paper. My youngest son just graduated from West Hills yesterday. Mrs. Finley as she was known back then was a delightful teacher and we actually had fun in her class as we gained knowledge. She was a beautiful woman and I'm sure she made a difference in many peoples lives. I'm truly lucky to have had her as a teacher. Took her classes in '75 or '76.

Kate, you have touched us, taught us, and loved us. For this I am forever grateful. You told us we could have it all… Family, love, careers, and all in great shoes! You told us we deserved the best. You prepared us for having children, and what to do once they actually got here! You were honest, and we all felt a sense of safety with you. You made us laugh, even at ourselves. You cried with us through losses of your own as well as ours. You broke down barriers… we were all equal when the classroom doors closed behind you. You taught us to hold our heads high, go forth, and conquer. This world is a better place because of you. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself…

Love and prayers to your family during this time.

A Sister-In-Law beyond compare! Your style, spirit, and enthusiasm for life, family, and friends have been a shining example for all of us. There is a huge void in our lives without you, but you helped raise seven wonderful children who will carry your torch forward (not to mention the countless students you have nurtured into adulthood). Rest in Peace and play some bridge with Mom and Dad!

Kate was an extraordinary, faith-filled woman and a source of LIGHT, LOVE, and LAUGHTER to everyone whose lives she touched. Our earthly loss is definitely heaven's gain. No doubt, she is teaching all the angels to do an Irish jig. Thanks, Kate, for the GIFT that you were and ARE to all of us.
