KATHLEEN MATHENY Obituary

MATHENY, KATHLEEN BURROWS 1921 to 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet Katie. Born to Walter and Kate Burrows in Westminster, Canada, Katie was the sixth of eight children. In 1923, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Coronado. The family loved the island and the island was good to them. Times were hard, but the children found jobs wherever they could. Katie took on babysitting jobs at a very early age and helped the family out financially. She also became the big sister who could supply an occasional Nesbitt orange soda to her younger siblings. What a treat! The Burrows clan enjoyed the ferry, street cars, movie theater, Tent City, dancing, Jerry's Café and riding the waves on pillow cases! Katie attended Coronado schools and graduated from Coronado High. During World War II, Katie enlisted in the Marine Corps where she served as a sergeant in recruiting. After the war, she attended San Diego State, graduated with an accounting degree and settled in Pacific Beach. She went to work for the County of San Diego as an accountant for 24 years and retired in 1975. After retirement, Katie used her talents to help friends and relatives. Whether it was helping with their businesses, caring for their children or helping with financial needs, she was always there for people. Although Katie did not have any children of her own, she, along with her sister Jessie, took a keen interest in their many nieces and nephews. The young ones would receive lessons for sailing, ice skating, skiing, bowling, hula, horseback riding or golf. These opportunities opened up new areas of exposure which they would never have experienced otherwise. Survived by sister, Florence and brother, William. Preceded in death by siblings Betty, Jessie, Percy, Walter and Winnie. After several years of declining health, Katie moved into assisted living in April 2010. She passed away on Tuesday, September 28th. Her kind spirit and her stories will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Private memorial and scattering of ashes at sea.

We will miss great aunt Katie's easy laugh and fun spirit. She was a good listener, more adventurous than she seemed, and a thoughtful person.

I was so saddened to read of Ms. Matheny's passing. She was my supervisor in 1973 at the Auditor's office of the County. I always thought highly of her and she was a good mentor in starting me out on a good career. My sympathies to all of her family.
