KITTY RASO Obituary

RASO, KITTY Born December 6th, 1918, in New York, New York, Kitty Raso went to join The Lord peacefully in her sleep Monday evening October 18th, 2010. Kitty, the founding Matriarch of Chula Vista's landmark, La Bella Pizza Garden, endured many trials in her 93 years. With the loss of her first husband, Phillip to cancer in 1943, Kitty was left a 25 year old widow with four young daughters. It was drive and determination that got this single mom through the hard times. In order to bring her family relief from New York City's summer heat, Kitty would take a cooking job on a friend's upstate farm. It was on that farm in the summer of 1948 where Kitty met Tony Raso, a handsome bachelor who owned a small dairy farm close by. Tony and Kitty were a product of a simpler time. It was at their first encounter, where Kitty prepared delicious Lasagna, that she simply stated, "You know I'm Italian, You're Italian, I have the children, you have the farm, we should get married." Tony immediately agreed. Their loving devotion to one another lasted 55 years. They worked the farm together from 1948 through 1954 when in 1954, finding times on the farm getting tougher, Kitty and Tony decided to pull stakes and brought the family, Rosary, Ginger, Phyllis and their new son Joey to Chula Vista, California. Opening La Bella Pizza Garden, a small Mom and Pop Italian diner on 3rd Ave. downtown, the Rasos worked hard and established themselves as beloved Chula Vista residents. That first year, Papa Tony ran the kitchen, while mom served the customers with little Joey running around with a broom. In 1959, their second son, Tony, was born. That year also brought the first of many renovations to where, today, La Bella Pizza Garden, coupled with the adjacent La Bella Cafe & Games has grown to a 25,000 square foot South Bay Landmark with 80 employees. Kitty has always given back to the community with her involvement in numerous charities and organizations. Kitty was president of the International Food Service Executive Organization, on the board of the Salvation Army, instrumental in raising funds for the American Cancer Society, Chairman of the UN Day Committee and a founding member of the Saint Rose Branch of the Italian Catholic Federation. She was preceded in death by her husband Phillip, her husband Tony, and her daughters Josephine, Ginger, and Phyllis. Kitty is survived by three children, Rosary, Joseph, and Tony Jr., eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild. Viewing will be Friday, October 22nd, 2010, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Community Mortuary, 855 Broadway, Chula Vista. Services will be Saturday, October 23rd, 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 293 "H" St., Chula Vista, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 4470 Hilltop Dr., San Diego.

Love this family, my sister grew up being friends with Stephanie, we were fortunate to know such kind and hard working people, I only wish I could“ve met Kitty because she is legendary to my city and was a charitable hard working woman. May she rest in peace.

My prayers and sympathy to the Raso family after hearing of Kitty's passing. As a young teenager, I was fortunate to have played on one of Chula Vista South Pony League's teams sponsored by La Bella Pizza Garden. Kitty and Tony would always host an end of the season pizza party for their sponsored teams. So, at an early age, I learned what it meant to give back to the community as a result of the example set by the Raso family. The legacy of their generosity to the community of Chula Vista will not be forgotten. They set the standard for all of us when we consider how to serve our own communities.

Kitty Raso was a perfect example of giving back to the community and Chula Vista has been blessed to have her family giving all these years - and continuing to do so during her long illness.
She was one who did not mince words but she was a friend to all who knew her. Most of our 40 plus local residents grew up going to La Bellas for the good food & fun.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family and I hope they always remember that our world is a better place because of Kitty.

Many fond memories of Fire Dept. functions at LaBella's in which Kitty was Ring Leader. Her manner, do as she said. She was definately the Incident Commander. Good Food, Good Times, & Good person. Sympathies to the family, rest assured Kitty will be telling us where to set when we get to heaven.

Chula Vista will not be the same with Kitty gone, but her influence will always remain. LaBella's was always a wonderful place to have a party, or just go have food and drink. Kitty and Tony made everyone feel like family. Rest in peace, Kitty, you earned it.

Kitty (aka "MAMA"), the "official" Mayor of Downtown Chula Vista - you shall now rest and dance in heaven with Papa Tony!! For all these years I have known you, Papa and the children (18 years)- I have always been "appreciated and welcomed" as a member of the Raso Family...! You taught me that it is better to give then to receive, to care and support, to learn and teach...LIFE lessons were abundantly offered by you (virtue of many ways) to provide Chula Vista a better community; You "MAMA Kitty" set a forever example and will be missed! Memories and devotion shall live on - All my LOVE and THANKS..."Star-News Steve"

The life in Chula Vista centers around La Bella's in many facets.. all have fond memories of Kitty and Papa.. her bubbly personality made you feel at home and the reason we all go back often, be warmed and know love is what you feel when you embrace the Raso family at this time.

I was saddened to hear of your loss. Kitty was indeed a vital part of Chula Vista's history. How many times in the mid to late sixties did we meet at La Bella's, just to have a snack and soak up the love and companionship of friends and family, which became, over time, one and the same.

RIP Miss Kittty.
I worked for you for a couple of weeks in High school....now in my late 50's, I still remember LaBellas with great fondness.
It has been forty years since I have call Chula Vista my home, but as recently as a few days ago, I kept complaining that no one could make a pizza the way LaBellas did.
We had many band parties there, my father's reitirement was held at LaBellas...many memories because of the Raso family.
May you have comfort in knowing how much your family has meant to current and former residents of Chula Vista.

I worked for Kitty and her late husband Tony many years ago, I was just 19-20 years old. There were both very good to me during those hectic times of the late 60's. There will always be a place in my heart for both of them, Tom CArr

My condolences to the Raso family on the loss of Kitty. Growing up in Chula Vista in the 50's and 60's would not have been the same without LaBella's. After a Friday night at the Vogue Theater, or a basketball game at the gym on Saturday, LaBella's was alway a must. It was simply a part of growing up in that great town. Chula Vista has lost an institution and the world has lost a great lady. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time of loss.
