Marjorie Horton Obituary

HORTON, MARJORIE ALETHEA Marjorie Horton died peacefully at home September 5, 2009, at the age of 99. She was born January 27, 1910 in Fresno to parents Charles and Dorothy Protherde. She grew up in San Antonio, Texas, got her RN degree in 1932, and married Frank Horton in Vallejo in 1935. He died in 1975. Though Marge bought the Allendale Beauty Shop on Park Boulevard and operated it for many years, at the age of 40, she earned a BA in elementary education at Long Beach State College. A few years later, she added a masters degree in special education and got her PHD from San Diego State. Marjorie always said that teaching children was the most fulfilling activity of her life. She taught in local schools until retiring in 1975. A world traveler, she circled the globe twice and saw most of the United States as well. She was an accomplished artist who painted in both oil and acrylic. She also designed and crafted tables from wrought iron and marble. Marge was known for her spunkiness, generosity and unwavering equanimity. As the poets say, Marjorie Horton was beloved on Earth. Marge is survived by her longtime companion, Frank Keifer, her sister Ruth Swift, nieces Sharie Wilson and Deborah Chadwick, all of Huntington Beach, and Dorothy Persky of San Diego.
