MARY OPIOLA Obituary

OPIOLA, MARY DUL Aug. 2, 1908 to Nov. 11, 2010 Mary passed away Thursday, November 11th, at 2:45 a.m. The previous weekend she was surrounded by her family, bedside in the hospital, where she had been after a heart attack on November 4th. She was 102 years old. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, she went to Poland with her parents to visit her paternal grandparents, in 1913. The following year, World War I broke out, and her father was conscripted into the Polish Army. He died six weeks later. Mary, her two brothers, a sister and her mother stayed in Poland. When Mary turned 21, her mother encouraged her to return to the United States, already as an American citizen. She was sponsored to people in Detroit, Michigan, where she served as a Nanny, and became involved with the Polish community there. She met Albert Opiola, and they were married in 1932. Their first and only child Jean Mary, was born in 1933. Mary spent much of her life in Flint, Michigan, where she lived from 1932 to 1970. She moved to San Diego, to join her daughter and her family. Her husband, Albert, preceded her in death in 1973. Mary was very active all during her life. She had many friends and loved her garden and swimming. She joined with a group of eight women, who would meet each week at a spa to swim and have breakfast afterwards. As the years went by, the group got smaller, until Mary was the only one left. She leaves her daughter, Jean, and son-in-law, Dr. Stephen All, III of San Diego, grandchildren, Wendy All-Rosen of Los Angeles, CA, Lisa Marie King of Seattle, WA, Suzanne Holm of Temecula, CA, Stephen Albert All, IV of Santa Cruz, CA, and Michal John All, of San Diego, CA. Her great-grandchildren are Garrett McCain, Natan and Alex King, Amanda and Grant Holm. Come celebrate Mary's life at St. Teresa Catholic Church (College at Navajo) in Del Cerro, San Diego, December 27, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Teresa Church, Navajo at College Avenue, San Diego, CA 92120 or The Salvation Army, East County Chapter, Broadway Avenue, EI Cajon, California 92020.
