MARY HAWKINS Obituary

HAWKINS, MARY JANE WALLACE Mary Jane Hawkins, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Silver Oak Country Estates Senior Living in Vista, California; she was 95 years old. Born and raised in Bisbee, Arizona, she attended and graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson then moved to Phoenix where she married her late husband, Chic Hawkins, started a family, and began her teaching career. The family moved to Point Loma in 1960 where they would continue to reside for the next fifty years. During that period, she taught 2nd and 4th grade at Kate Sessions Elementary School until 1980. After her retirement, Mary Jane continued to teach by tutoring neighborhood children in reading and math for free. She volunteered at Sunset Hills Elementary and tutored at Midway Adult School, even assisting many elderly friends providing transportation and cooking. All of those whose lives she touched will fondly remember Mary Jane for her generosity, kindness, and unconditional love. Her unwavering dedication was first and foremost in everyday life. She instilled an understanding and philosophy to all around her that "Working hard should only be preceded by loving the special ones in your life even harder." Her loss will be painfully felt by her family: Ken and Elaine Hawkins, Saundra and Bob Muir, and, Ron and Judi Hawkins; grandchildren Bobby and wife Shannon Muir, Kenny Hawkins and Jose, Kevin and Michelle Muir, Tiffany and husband Rich Occhinero, Casey and wife Lindsay Hawkins, and Meghan and Brendan Hawkins; great-grandchildren Tyler, Trevor, Tanner, and Avery Jane Muir, and Gracie and Jack Occhinero. Mary Jane was pre-deceased by one grandson, John Edward Muir in 2005. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the San Diego Hospice for exceptional care and compassion as they cared for Mary Jane in the final months of her life. The family is also deeply grateful to the owner and caregivers of Silver Oak Country Estates Senior Living. A private memorial is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be sent to San Diego Hospice.

We loved to visit Aunt Mary Jane and Uncle Chic. I'll never forget the view of the ocean from their house, the tree house, the coo coo clock, the great times at the beach, and of course, the loving hostess. Many of my early birthdays were in San Diego. She always made me feel special. It was like having an extra grandparent! She was truly a favorite!

I loved to go to Aunt Mary Janes and Uncle Chic's house! It was a magical place to me as a child - near the beach, beautifully decorated, full of laughter and fun, and there was always delicious food to eat! So many happy memories. I'm glad she was in my life in those early years.

Barbara's Aunt Mary Jane was a great cook & hostess. Many great memories of eating "More", one of her favorites. And great memories of times at the SD house & the beach. Thanks, MJ
