RITA CUSTEAU Obituary

CUSTEAU, RITA L. October 22, 1925 to September 11, 2010 Rita Laura Custeau, 84, of Henderson Drive, La Mesa. She was the daughter of the late Odilon and Florina (Primeau) Custeau. Rita grew up in Lowell, MA. Rita received a BS in Physical Sciences in 1947 from Bridgewater State College, then joined the Army and continued with school earning a MS in Physical Therapy and discharged from the Army in 1953 as a 1st Lt. She returned to college earning a MS in Physical Education from Smith College. She enjoyed a career as a teacher and athletics coach at various colleges, spending most of her time at University of Connecticut. At UCon, Rita was recognized as a passionate educator. She entered administration, finally being named the Dir. of Women's Athletics. During her 29 years of retirement, she volunteered at a Physical Therapy Clinic, delivered Meals on Wheels, read 100's of books and traveled the world, visiting at least 19 countries. Rita was a loyal friend, wonderful sister and awesome aunt. She will be missed by her brother's, Gerard (Jerry) of Northampton, MA and Leo of Santee, adoring nieces and nephews, Cynthia Custeau and Nancy Lee Wilson of MA, Carrie Kusza of Maryland, Jim Custeau & Steve Custeau of the San Diego area & Jack Custeau of Idaho, their families, numerous friends and former students. She will be remembered during a Mass at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Fletcher Hills on Nov. 9, 2010 at 5:30 followed by interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery with full Military honors on Nov. 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rita's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Dollars for Scholars or any charity of choice. El Cajon-Lakeside-Santee Mortuary and Cremation Service are handling the arrangements.
