ROCCO MARZANO Obituary

Rocco G. Marzano was born on February 24, 1916 in Ohio. Son of Salvatore and Raffaela Marzano, he was the youngest of five. His parents and siblings preceded him in death. He attended Pitt University where he received his Bachelor's Degree. In 1941, while attending the University of Hawaii, Rocco was called to active military service in the U.S. Army and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. A member of the famed 442nd infantry regiment with the 100th battalion, Major Rocco G. Marzano earned four Purple Hearts serving in World War II before returning to Connellsville, PA. He married Marie Nicolina (Nickel) Pape, on July 27, 1946. They raised three sons. Rocco retired after a successful teaching career in San Diego City Schools. He is united with his late son, Phillip. Rocco is survived by his loving wife, Marie, their two sons, Samuel and David, their daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His kind, gentle spirit and generous heart will be dearly missed by many. A memorial service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on November 23, 2010, at 11:30 a.m.

Mr. Marzano taught at Clairemont HS and I was in his class. He also headed the ROTC as I recall but I never knew about his 4 Purple Hearts. I am sorry I caused him so much trouble in class! I remember him well and I am so sorry for your loss and our country's loss of a true hero. Thank you Mr. Marzano and your family for the sacrafices you made to keep us a free nation. My sincere condolences!
