WALT DANIELS Obituary

DANIELS, WALT April 20, 1943 to October 20, 2009 From his favorite leather chair in the home he shared with his wife of 42 years, Walt Daniels could glance around the family room at the things he loved most: photos of his wife and two daughters, sports memorabilia of all descriptions, mementos from far-flung world travel, shelves of books, and a view west across San Diego to the ocean. Walt died Tuesday morning of injuries from an accident at Qualcomm Stadium where he worked for the San Diego Chargers. Walt loved being part of the Chargers organization, even in the losing seasons, and his uncashed paycheck for $25 from working at the 1988 Super Bowl still hangs on the wall, framed with pride and humor. His wife Marilyn sat behind him at Wilson Junior High and they dated during their years at Hoover High School and SDSU; they married in 1967. His daughters Tina and Patti grew up with a dad who joked around, barbequed steaks, camped with them at the beach each summer and taught them the value of competition and achievement through hard work. Walt was extremely proud of their success and gave all the credit to their mom. A generation of high school football players was lucky to have Walt on the field refereeing and teaching new referees to imbue the game with fairness, safety and a positive spirit. He was passionate about playing Over The Line, softball and golf. Walt's competitiveness extended to playing trivia, cards and backgammon, and he proved after long winning streaks that he was also a gracious loser. As a sports collector, nothing captured Walt's attention more than baseball memorabilia. Commemorative pins and autographed baseballs sparked giddy enthusiasm. (Forgetting to load film in the camera at the Baseball Hall of Fame did not.) Despite recent disappointment, Walt was a loyal Padres season ticket holder. Sometimes quiet, often funny, Walt was stubborn, proud to a fault, and had a generosity that was as unassuming as it was extravagant. The family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, to two organizations Walt supported: San Diego County Officials Hall of Fame, c/o Hall of Champions, 2131 Pan American Plaza, San Diego 92101; and San Diego Youth Football Fund, 18595 Starvation Mountain Road, Escondido, CA 92025. Services will be held Monday, October 26th, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Abbey Mortuary, followed by interment.

It sure doesn´t seem it´s been fourteen years since Walt passed. I played over the line way back when we were
Younger. Knew he and Marilyn from Hoover and SDSU.
Great memories. I prey Marilyn is doing fine and wonder how she is doing.

To Walt's Family,

I am another member of the Hoover Class of 1961. I am sorry that I didn't know Walt very well back then and over the years. He certainly was cherished by a large number of people. That is what has brought me the most consolation in times like this - that so many people have been affected in a positive way by your husband and father. That knowledge and my Faith. May the Lord help you through this challenge and the realization that he has beat the rest of us to his reward. Walt and you are now in my daily prayers.

Marilyn,
I was a classmate of yours and Walt's at Wilson and Hoover. I didn't personally know Walt but we probably had a class or two together over the years of secondary education. I was saddened by reading about his sudden death. It is such a loss to you, your family, and all of your friends. The wonderful memories and love for him you have in your hearts will help sustain you in the upcoming years.

Dear Marilyn,
Caroline and I would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to you and your daughters Patti and Tina.
Although it has been many years since I last had contact with Walt, he has always occupied a fond place in my high school and college memories. When I think of Walt, I think of a relentless competitor with a gentle heart...a person who would quickly come to your aid in a time of crisis...a man devoted to doing the right thing. Walt Daniels affected the lives of many in the most positive of ways. He'll be missed by all who knew him.

Thank you for sharing the love of your lives with me for so many years.
I was honored to have been a friend of Walt's. His caring during my time of need helped me more than he ever knew.
The times our families spent together were very special. My wife and daughter still remembers the puppet show she and Patti put on for us on your stairs.

Marilyn, Patti and Tina, my mom and I wanted to extend our sympathies to you. Although I was just a child when I knew him, I could always tell what a great father he was. I have fond memories of him as Patti and I grew up together as close friends, and he would just watch us play our silly games and smile and shake his head:) My mom remembers playing countess card games with he and Marilyn as Patti and I played in the other room. I could also tell even back then that he was a loving husband as well, just a great man overall. Both of his daughters turned out to be very strong, independent women, and I'm sure he had a lot to do with that as well. He will surely be missed.

Love. Kendra (Lowe) Bellue and Carolyn (Poole) Reedy & family

Hi Marilyn, Tina, Patti,

I was so shocked to here about Walt, but am so happy I had a chance to know him for a little while when we worked at Kelco. I admired Walt in all he did. I enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit with ya'll in the old days and will never forget his yellow VW bug. I will keep you and family in my prayers. He will be missed.

Marilyn, Tina and Patti,

Walt will be missed by all of those who knew him. Personally, I am proud to have known him as a colleague at Kelco. Whether times were easy or tough, Walt remained true to his beliefs and kept his infectious sense of humor. He was openly proud of his family, sharing stories about his daughters as they grew over the years. I will miss him.
