Though we surely did not have him with us long enough, Pete packed more laughter, love, and generosity into his too few days than most people do in much longer lifetimes. May this bring us all some comfort as we continue to mourn the loss of Pete each and every day.

Every time I drive by Dan and Sandy's I still glance to the right as so often Pete's truck was there as he was saying hi to his brother or helping with the lawn etc. I guess it gives me the opportunity to say we miss you Pete and think of you often.

I just found out about Pete's passing. I was at the Elks Lodge meeting Wednesday night and his Memorial was read on the floor of the Lodge, several people stood and gave testimony to how wonderful a man Pete was. He will be dearly missed by all of us in the Thursday night Elk's golf league. It just won't be the same.

Dear Michelle, Chrissy, and my cousins Betsy, Buddy, Danny and Matt,
I was heartbroken when I heard about my younger 1st cousin Pete. I can still see his smile and hear him say, "Hi Cuz". Anyone who knew Pete or spent even a little bit of time with him realized what a special individual he was. He was kind, helpful, and a hardworking “take charge man”. Many will miss Pete, including his “cuz” from Chicago. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

To say Pete was one of a kind is truly an understatement. I had the opportunity to play golf back in the 80's when we were members of the State Champions 1979 Griffin Golf Team. Years have past since that event. However, the last couple of years I had the opportunity to work with Pete on some projects at Fallingbrook Townhomes.
You could tell Pete was a special individual. Along with hardworking, very, very honest & giving, Pete was truly loyal, understanding, & appreciative. Pete always had the best interest of his association at heart when making decisions. I'm sure these qualities flowed through all aspects of his life.
I will deeply miss Pete for who he was & what he stood for. The world needs more people like Pete. My thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends, & associates.
Sincerely,
Darrell Tureskis

Michelle,
I am shocked and saddened to hear of Pete's passing and express my heartfelt condolences.
Every thought of Pete brings a smile to my face.
Pete was a constant fixture during my highschool years and made every event memorable. He took care of his friends and was a good guy.
When he met you Michelle, he became an even better man.
I regret our paths drifted apart after high school but have enjoyed running into you and Pete during Springfield events and am very happy that I ran into you both during the Ethnic Festival this past year and that we had a really good visit.
I know you, Chrissy, and the rest of Pete's family and friends also have wonderful memories of Pete that bring smiles to your hearts and I wish you a lifetime of those smiles compliments of Pete.

I met Pete through Michelle, who also has tons of friends, and like Pete, is the first to invite you into their circle of friends, fun and laughter.
What I remember is being overwhelmed when I'd walk into their Halloween parties, Illini parties, or bars, by the sheer number of Maher friends that I had yet to meet or didn't quite feel at home with yet.
But, when I did walk in, Michelle was there to greet and Pete was always there with a grin and a beer in hand, making me feel as welcome and as comfortable as any of their old friends.
Later, at those same parties, when I became more comfortable, I'd look around and Pete would be there, leaning against the bar, beer in hand, with a quiet grin on his face, knowing people were enjoying themselves seemed to truly make him happy.
I am happy Pete and Michelle befriended me and feel blessed to have known Pete and his kindness.

Michelle, Crissy, Dan, Sandy, Betsy and the rest of your family; George and I are so sorry for Pete's untimely death. He was a great friend to both of us. We always commented on his giving nature. He was the first to pitch in when we moved. He was over in a flash to set up a keg for our St. Pat's parties. If we were knee deep in leaves, he was there to help us. He was willing to come over and charge a battery. He would help give advice and help with our lawn. When I really wanted pictures hung and George said we will do it later, Pete was there with a level and a hammer to hang them for me. I could go on and on with the reasons why we loved Pete. He is in heaven, no doubt. We are here for any of you at anytime, just as Pete would be for us.

Chrissy and Michelle:
Well the paper couldn't have described Pete more perfectly, that is exactly how I remember him....alot of fun, always smiling, always ready to party! I told the staff at work, I remember when Christina was a baby and Pete was watching her, and we all went over to their apt, having a few beers, smoking (I'm sure - sorry Michelle), and looking at that baby in her car seat in the middle of the room thinking how cute she looked....and now I'm fortunate enough to have her working as my graduate intern. I was looking forward to the day I'd see Pete and tell him what a great job he and Michelle did raising Chrissy. She's a wonderful young professional, and I'm always reminding her that I know her dad, so she better behave herself - ya know she does have half of Pete's genes!
In all sincerity, I can't imagine the loss you are feeling. I hope you'll find comfort in knowing that Pete brought a lot of laughter to those he met. My prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Please call if you need anything.

Michelle - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Pete. He was one of the kindest people I have ever met. I never thought of him (or you!) as my landlord, but as a friend and neighbor. I'll never forget all the kind and thoughtful things he did for me while I was living down the street from you all. He once sent me home with a full case of beer from one of your garage cook-outs. Guess he was just trying to keep the poor, starving med student well-stocked on beverages! I'll never forget him. He always made me smile when I saw him. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Maher family,
I was so sad to hear the news of the passing of Pete this week. I have good memories of him at Griffin.
May the good Lord bring you peace and comfort this week and during the tough days ahead. I pray that your faith is strong, you'll need to draw on it often.
I pass along this Psalm that a good friend passed on to me 3 years ago in my hour of need:
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.
As the passing days turn into months and years, you will certainly grow to understand what God means when He says 'Do not be afraid, I am with you...'
My heart is heavy today. I will keep Pete, the family and friends in my daily prayers. I know that your faith, family and friends will help you make it through this challenging and sorrowful time.
May the Peace and Grace of God be with you today and everyday.

Michelle,Crissy,and Family,
I am saddened by the devastating passing of Pete.
There was never a more giving, helpful,do anything friend ,than Pete. From pheasant, duck, and rabbit hunting, to going to the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, to being the best host ,and chef at Illini parties, and golfing at the Elks, and other outings; there simply was no greater friend than Pete!
Pete was the first one at my house after the twin tornadoes to remove a tree from my fence so my labs were safe.
Hundreds of stories about Pete can be told about this special man by everyone that knew him.
Springfield and Sangamon County will sadly miss Pete; who was always another brother to me, and always will be.
A sad day in Springfield,
