DR. HAROLD EIESLAND Obituary

Harry Eiesland, 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 9, 2011 at his home in Anacortes, Washington.

He will be dearly missed by his family, many friends, colleagues and patients. Harry will be lovingly remembered for his intelligence, compassion, love of the outdoors, and sense of humor.

Harry was born September 18, 1943 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, son to Lloyd and Arlis (Twedt) Eiesland. He grew up on a farm near Canton, SD, the eldest of four children, and cousin to many.

He graduated from Canton High School after attending a one-room rural school through the eighth grade. He earned a biology degree from Harvard University, followed by a medical degree from the University of Washington.

While in Seattle he had the good fortune to meet a lovely pharmacy student from Okanogan on a blind date and the rest is history. Harry and Diane were married in 1967 and made their life in Seattle, then on the Presidio of San Francisco, where their two children were born and where Harry did his medical training with the Army.

He spent two years in Massachusetts working for the Army before being lucky enough to join Fidalgo Medical Associates in Anacortes in 1975. He could not have imagined a more beautiful place to raise a family and loved his life on the beach, with many happy hours spent boating and tending his vegetable garden.

Harry had a very satisfying career in internal medicine with a focus on oncology and gastroenterology until he retired in 2000. He was proud of many achievements -- chief of staff, hospital foundation, oncology program, Spirit of Island Hospital award, and quality care to his patients.

Since retirement, grandchildren, golf, and some amazing travel experiences kept him busy. Harry treasured his relationships with family, colleagues and so many good friends over the years. His was a life well-lived, and he recognized how fortunate he was.

He is survived by his wife Diane in Anacortes; mother Arlis, sister Karen Kennedy, her husband Kevin, brother Bruce Eiesland, sister Gail Eiesland, all of Sioux Falls; son Scott Eiesland and his wife Shari of Portland, OR; daughter Jan Eiesland and her husband Dave Martinez of Berkeley, CA; and four grandchildren he adored, Macy (10) and Kelsey (7) Eiesland, and Alex (3) and Owen (1) Martinez.

A memorial will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Harry wished to encourage donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Skagit County and the Island Hospital Foundation.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.

I have many great memories of Harold and I at Canton High School but some of the best ones are of playing baseball in the summer at Harrisburg for Wayne French. Harold was a great friend. May GOD'S blessing be with you as you remember Harold.
