FRANCES HYLAND Obituary

Frances Marjorie Quigley Hyland, a resident of Guemes Island for six years, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the age of 93.

She is survived by her children, Zoanne Hyland, RN, and partner Linda Donato; Ansel Q. Hyland, MD, and wife, Rebecca; grandsons, Justice and Joe Hyland; and great-grandson, Riley Hyland.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ansel E. Hyland, who died in 1995.

Frances was born in Albia, Iowa, the only child of Albert and Laura Quigley. She attended Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon, where she received a degree in Speech and Music, and then married her college sweetheart, Ansel Hyland, in Walla Walla, Washington on June 30, 1940.

Ansel, owner-manager of his family business, the Eugene Planing Mill, and Frances, built a home in Eugene, Oregon, where they lived for 56 years. Frances was a speech professor at Northwest Christian University for twenty-seven years, leaving a legacy of grateful college freshmen who learned to speak in front of a group thanks to her. She also served as an adjunct professor of speech at the University of Oregon during World War II.

Frances' community service included the YMCA Board of Directors, a stint as president of two PTA's and membership in the P.E.O. Sisterhood where she served twice as president of her local chapter. She also received the Zonta "Woman of the Year" award.

Her primary loves were work with the youth and work in the church. She and husband, Ansel, were members of the First Christian Church in Eugene serving as directors of the Junior High Sunday School for thirty years. Frances was a member of the State Board of the Disciples of Christ; she served on the Committee for the Ordination of Ministers and on the State Youth Committee; she directed and taught at the Christian Youth Fellowship Conference and at the CYF Camp for thirty years; she was on the Board of the First Christian Church where she served as a Deaconess and Elder.

When Frances moved to Guemes Island, Washington, to be close to her family, she became an active member of the United Church of Christ.

She loved to travel, hike, garden, water-ski, and entertain. She was an elegant woman whose love of the church, her family, her fellow man, and children made her a beloved citizen of many communities in her lifetime. Many will miss her.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Guemes Island Community Church with a reception to follow.

Memorials may be made to the Guemes Island Community Church, 7611 Guemes Island Road, Anacortes, WA, 98221 or to the P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA, 50312.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.

We were grateful to have known Frances, even for a short time. Even in her 80's she was a vibrant, energetic, and thoughtful woman with a wonderful sense of humor. We were sad to hear of her passing.
