Jean Kilpatrick, age 98, of Anacortes, Washington died Sunday, January 23, 2011. She was born Helene Veronique Henri on October 5, 1912 in Altona, New Jersey to William and Nathalia Henri.
After the death of her father, her mother remarried and Jean was adopted by her stepfather, changing her name to Jean Walker. Her younger years were spent in Massachusetts. Jean's first husband, Mr. Bartlett, was killed in action during World War II, after only a few months of marriage.
Jean met Archie Snow in Monterey, CA, and they were married in 1946. She was a dance teacher at the time and he worked in a nearby hotel. They moved to Ketchikan, AK, spending five years there. They then moved to Seattle and finally to Anacortes where they lived in a big house at 12th Street and J Avenue. Archie was an accountant at Fisherman's Pack Co-op until his untimely death in 1971.
Jean met B.C. Kilpatrick while at an Eagles function and they were married in 1973. They purchased a house across from the Guemes ferry landing, where they could watch the boats go by and feed the gold finches and shore birds. After B.C. retired from the ferry system, they spent their winters in Arizona. Jean was widowed in 2005.
Jean loved people, animals, gardening and just life in general. She practiced yoga, read her Bible every day and loved to dance. She was a small woman, but full of spunk.
Jean's niece, Donna Todd of Anacortes, remembers a woman who had a vast amount of stories to tell, loved history, and was full of adventure. "She and my brother, Dave Jordan, spent hours exploring Whidbey Island from one end to the other to discover what was just over the hill and around the corner. She was always fun to be with and was a happy spirited lady."
Her nephew, Howard McDaniel of San Diego, CA, recalled staying in Anacortes with Archie and Jean in the summer of 1962. "We went beachcombing, hiking all over the island, picking wild blackberries, fishing in Deception Pass, digging for oysters in the mud flats, hunting for beach agates after a storm......".
Jean was preceded in death by her three husbands. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Cheryl Kilpatrick of Anacortes and Don and Leilani Kilpatrick of Tonasket; grandchildren, Jason and Jaymes Kilpatrick of Anacortes, Brandon Kilpatrick of Bremerton, and Jasmin and Amber Kilpatrick of Tonasket; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Cassie Kilpatrick of Anacortes, Alyssa Kilpatrick of Hamilton and Alexander Kilpatrick of Bremerton; and her niece and spouse, Donna and Terry Todd of Anacortes.
