NEOLA NIXON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2010.
Neola Nixon, 90, a longtime resident of Anacortes, passed away on Friday morning, Oct. 29, 2010, at Fidalgo Care Center, where she had been a resident for the last few years.

Neola was born the last of five children to Ole and Melida (Perso) Lee on Sept. 15, 1920, in Cashton, Wisconsin. She grew up there and later attended St. Olaf College and then the University of Wisconsin, where she acted in as many plays as she could, and graduated with a degree in English.

On Sept. 12, 1942, Neola married Carroll Lower of nearby Ontario, Wisconsin. While he served in Europe during WWII, Neola, like many young women during the war, joined the workforce, serving as a secretary for the federal government.

After Carroll returned from service, the couple moved back to Ontario, where their three children, Candace, Lucy and Stephen, were born.

In 1954 the family moved to Anacortes, where Carroll worked at the Shell refinery. Neola stayed home with the children until they were all in school, at which point she went to work for the Anacortes School District. She taught fourth grade for two years, then moved to the high school, where she taught English, speech, drama and journalism. During this time she also directed many student plays, including Arsenic and Old Lace, The Diary of Anne Frank and Our Town.

Eventually she shifted from teaching to counseling, working with students in that capacity until 1980, when she retired after twenty-four years with the school district.

She and Carroll celebrated their retirement with an East Asian cruise, followed by years of traveling around the U.S. and western Canada. In later years they went to Europe, visiting a long-time pen pal of Neola's in England, as well as the various places Carroll had been during the war.

After Carroll's death in 1993, Neola became reacquainted with an old friend and high school sweetheart, Robert Nixon, of Appleton, Wisconsin. On June 15, 2001, the two were married in Wisconsin, and then returned to Anacortes to live.

Neola was a longtime member of the Methodist Church in Anacortes. She enjoyed singing and was active in the church choir and as a soloist. She also loved all kinds of handcrafts, and sewed, knitted and did needlepoint for years.

Neola is survived by her husband Robert of Anacortes; daughter Candace Lower of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; daughter Lucy Lower and son-in-law Arthur Thornhill of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter-in-law Shirlene Lower of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the United Methodist Church of Anacortes, 2201 H Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy or to the local Humane Society.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.

Candy, Lucy and family,
There are areas of landscape, events, and people of Anacortes, Washington which are truly beautiful — your Mother was a person of beauty.
I've known your Mom and your family all my life, having lived there on 17th street, three houses away. And what wonderful memories I have. Steve was my best friend, your home was always such a warm place to visit and play at, and your Mom was always so welcoming, friendly and loving. That warmth of relationship lasted as long as I knew Daisy, through High School as a counselor, and well beyond.
I was saddened to read of your Mom's passing — what a beautiful woman, inside and out!
I only wish I could be there in Anacortes to support you both and the family at the memorial service today. Please know how much I care, and am praying for you all. The Giles family is with you in heart.
Anacortes has been enriched, found warmth, and shone extraordinary beauty for your Mother's having lived there and loved there.
Personally, I have been wonderfully touched by you and by your family — Thank You so very, very much.
In the Love of Christ,
Dave Giles

Neola Lower Nixon was always Granny Goodwitch to my children; they loved it when she came to visit because she gave them undivided attention. As I look back over our long friendship I now realize that is exactly why she was loved by so many. Her gift of laughter, luscious perfume, dangling jewelry and home made bread livened our house so many times but never enough! I too heard Neola sing Scarlett Ribbons just last Spring. It is a gift I will cherish always. My best to Bob, Candy, Lucy, Shirlene and Family Fondly, Louise Halm

Robert, Candace, Lucy and family,
I wish to extend my condolences to all of you on the loss of your mother. She was one of my favorite people during my high school tenure at Anacortes High School ('59-63) because she was my counselor and would listen! Her advice was always right on and I picked the Dental Hygiene profession because of her guidance.
She will never be far from your thoughts and her memory will comfort you as time goes on. May God bless you and your family.

To Robert, Candace, Lucy and family,
Neola was a very special teacher and counselor in my high school career '59-62 at AHS. Mrs. Lower was one of those educators who made a big difference in my education. Speech class gave me the confidence to stand in front of a group and talk without being terrified and the support she provided as I was in the process of choosing the right school for nurses training,.
A beautiul smile always welcomed you into her counseling office.
May your fond memories be a comfort to you during this time of loss. She will always be that bright star in the sky that was there for me and so many others in school.

Neola (Daisy) was an inspiration for all of us. Her love of music and knowledge of songs was amazing. My special moment was witnessing her singing "Scarlett Ribbons" with her daughter Candace one evening. Even though my voice is not as sweet and my memory for the songs not as strong I will try to continue the singing for my sweet Daisy for the residents at Fidalgo Care. Bob, your devotion and patience was wonderful, she's lucky to have found you twice. Don't be a stranger, we love you Bob!
With Love,
Nurse Jill
