Joseph Springstead Obituary

June 28, 1949 - June 25, 2011 SOUTH BEND - Mr. Joseph Winslow Springstead Jr., 61, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday while working in his yard. Joe was born in Milford, MI, to the late Joseph Winslow Sr. and Lodema (Hale) Springstead on June 28, 1949. He married Sandra Kaye Slater on June 11, 1976, in South Bend, who survives in South Bend. Joe and Kaye had two children, Richard P. "Rick" (Adrienne) Springstead, and their daughter, Giselle, and Amanda Springstead, all of South Bend. Also surviving are a brother, John (Laurie) Springstead, and his sister, Lissa (Jerry) Kent, both of Central Lake, MI. Joe was an electrician having had his own electrical contracting business for many years, but was currently employed at the University of Notre Dame were he had worked since 2001. Joe was a "Horse Show Dad," a member of the Indiana Paint Horse Association, and had volunteered for years with 4-H. Most recently he loved being a new grandfather. He was proud of his son, Rick, for his service as a firefighter, and his daughter Amanda's recent graduation from the University of Notre Dame. The Mass of Christian Burial will celebrate the life of Joe at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m. Friday on the Notre Dame campus, with Rev. Paul Doyle, CSC, officiating. His ashes will be buried later at Lakeview Cemetery in Eastport, MI. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the McGann Hay University Chapel, 2313 E. The University of Notre Dame lost one of their best. Joe was a friend to everyone. Rick and Amanda, Joe would just light up when I would ask him about his kids. No one worked any harder or was more dedicated to his job and Utilities then Joe. We are so sorry for your loss, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers as we grieve with you.
