Olga Smith Obituary

Jan. 29, 1907 - March 14, 2011
WINONA LAKE - Our beloved "Auntie," Olga Irene Smith of Grace Village Healthcare, Winona Lake, IN, went to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus on Monday, March 14, 2011. She was born on January 29, 1907, in Lebanon, IN, to the late Robert H. Smith and Lillian (Cole) Smith. She was preceded in death by a brother, James of Indianapolis, IN; and a sister, Bonetha Fenimore of Mishawaka, IN. She is survived by a nephew, James (Bill) Smith of Coatesville, IN, a niece, Lois Liebert of Mishawaka, IN, and their children and grandchildren. Olga worked for many years as a secretary in Mishawaka, Chicago and Winona Lake, IN. Her shorthand skill became apparent even at age 99, when she wrote notes in shorthand for herself. After retiring, she served as a volunteer foster grandparent for special education classrooms and the Northern Indiana State Hospital in the South Bend area until she was in her 80s. She moved to Warsaw, IN, in 1993, and to Grace Village Residential Care, Winona Lake, IN, in 1999. She lived there in assisted living until nearly 99 years of age and then her remaining years in Grace Village Healthcare, where in both places she was lovingly cared for and loved for her sense of humor, non-complaining spirit, and love of singing, especially hymns. Olga loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart and served His Church faithfully. She was a much-loved Sunday School teacher of early elementary-age children until age 86. At around 4' - 8" in height, her students loved to compare their height to hers. She was a "prayer warrior" for those children long after they had grown up. She enjoyed traveling and went by herself to Europe to visit missionary friends and to Venezuela twice to visit her niece. She was a blessing until her last breath on this earth. We will miss her very much, but we rejoice that she is finally seeing the Lord Jesus, her Savior, after 103 years. Friends may visit from 5-7 on Thursday, March 17th, at the Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw, IN, followed by a service at 7 p.m., with Rev. Glen Byers officiating. On Friday, March 18th, friends may visit at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main S., Mishawaka, IN, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will also be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19th, in Bubb Funeral Chapel, Mishawaka, IN, with Rev. Daniel J. Boes officiating. Graveside services will follow at Culver Masonic Cemetery, with Mark Liebert officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Twin Branch Bible Church, 3807 Vistula Road, Mishawaka, IN 46544; First Baptist Church of Warsaw, 2819 Patterson Road, Warsaw, IN 46580; or Grace Village, 337 Grace Village Drive, Winona Lake, IN 46590.

Not sure what to say?

Your family will be my thoughts and prayers. I remember Olga from Courts of Colfax, I was the housekeeper. I remember the first time I introduced my son to her. We went to her apartment and my son made the comment, " your not very big." She just laughed. I am sure she touched many peoples lives and left memories that will never be forgotten.

Dear Lois and family
We have such fond memories of Olga and our Mother (Nellie) while
they were both living at the Courts of Colfax in Warsaw. The Lord had
a hand getting them to live across the hall from each other . They were wonderful friends who always enjoyed their time together. Our prayers are with you.

Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. I still remember very clearly seeing Olga in the foyer at Twin Branch with her lovely smile and surrounded by children. ~Margo (Holderbaum) Lewis

We send our prayers for the family. Olga was my Sunday school teacher when I was a little boy. I still remember giving her hugs when I was all grown up and towering over her. She is a part of my ministry here in Africa today. We are grateful for her life and testimony.
With our prayers,
John Sommer,
Missionary to Ghana, West Africa
