Richard Arthur Olson, in Dedham, May 28, 2011 at age 66. Raised in Houghs Neck, Quincy, beloved son of the late William A. L. and Dorothy M. (Cruwys) Olson. Dear brother to Dorothy Dalzell of North Carolina, Linda Cavan of South Carolina, Paula Avitabile of Weymouth, MA and the late William Billy, Jr. Also, brother-in-laws, Roger Cavan, Stephen Avitabile and the late Bruce Dalzell. Loving uncle to Scott, Pamela, Julie, Jeffrey, Joyce, Lori and Stephen W. as well as several great-nieces and nephews. Educated in the Quincy Public Schools and Wentworth Institute, he began his career as a civil engineer for the City of Quincy along side his older brother and mentor Billy. He was also employed at Mass Electric. As a young man Richard was an avid boatsman and sailed throughout Quincy Bay and the Boston Harbor Islands. He was a past member of the Quincy Yacht Club, Houghs Neck Congregation Church and YMCA. He loved swimming in the ocean as saltwater, a cure all, he said. He enjoyed strumming the guitar and banjo with many a song to sing. Music was his passion and in later years, enjoyed his collection of vinyl records. Those who knew Richard appreciated his sense of humor and love and kindness to animals. Linda, Dotty and Paula - I am so sorry to hear that Richard has passed away. I remember growing up with all of you in the "Neck" and the friendship Richard and my brother Jim shared. May your memories bring you comfort in the days to come. Love Mary Ann (Please contact me.)

Oh I'll be going, leaving the noises of the street,
To where a lifting foresail-foot is yanking at the sheet;
To a windy, tossing anchorage where yawls and ketches ride,
Oh I'l be going, going, until I meet the tide.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Richard over the past 3 years. I genuinely enjoyed spending time with him and getting to know who he was as a person. Richard always made me laugh, it was impossible to not like a man with his sense of humor. We bonded over our love for the ocean and animals (he even spent time with my own cat!). I love and miss him so so so much and will never ever forget him. Miss you Richie!!!

I have great remembrances of Richard from our days at the HNCC Pilgrim Fellowship and from Houghs Neck in general.He was a cheerful, outgoing, and caring person. My condolences to Dotty and Linda. His mother was his biggest fan. Rest in Peace.
