Richard McLaughlin Obituary

Richard T. McLaughlin, of Scottsdale, died Sept. 6, 2010. He was 70. Beloved husband of Darlene P. McLaughlin of Scottsdale, he was the cherished son of the late Robert and Mary McLaughlin, owner of the Wee Folks Nursery School in South Boston; devoted father of Peter McLaughlin and his wife Mary of New York and Cheri Blackford and her husband Tim of Puerto Rico; loving brother of Janet Riley and her late husband Paul of Braintree, Mass., Philip McLaughlin and his wife Donna of Quincy, Mass., and the late Rosemary Gallagher and Robert McLaughlin Jr.; loving Grandpa to Charlie, Maddie and Henry. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard, known by his friends and family as "Dick" or "Mac", grew up in Quincy, graduating from Archbishop Williams High School, where he excelled athletically. Dick was an avid sports fan and athlete, excelling in baseball, tennis and golf. His love for baseball started at 4 years old and only grew throughout the years as he played for various little leagues, high school and then Curry College as a left handed pitcher. Mac was a member of the Los Angeles Dodger's for many years in vaious capacities. He was drafted as an outfielder in 1959, where he played for 13 years. He then went on to be a Scout for five years, a minor league manager for five years, a third base coach for the Dodger's AAA affiliate for five years and then and organizational instructor for the past 15 years. After retiring from the L.A. Dodger's in 1998, he worked as an organizational instructor for the Texas Rangers for three years. Dick McLaughlin was the only major league baseball bunting instructor of his time. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m. in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy. A celebration of life service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, prior to the funeral Mass in St. Ann's Church at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Mac and I were great friends in the 60's and early 70's in Scottsdale. He has always been a dear and important part of my life. My first thought of him is his great laugh and sense of humor...what a guy. He is remembered with fondness.

My condolences to you.

Dick and his family moved to the Wollaston section of Quincy in the 7th grade. We became friends and attended both Central Jr. High in Quincy and AWHS in Braintree. During that time, we played baseball and basketball together at Adams Field and the Fenno Street basketball courts.

After high school we went our separate ways as Dick pursued a baseball career as a player and coach with the LA Dodgers organization and I lived at various times in New York City, Buffalo, Alabama and Orlando FL. I did keep in touch with him at times through Christmas cards and knew that he moved to Scotsdale AZ with his wife.

I am very sorry to hear about his passing. Please accept my condolences.

I first met Richard in 1967 playing Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic. He was my roommate. We became lifelong friends. I knew his entire Family and spent many hours at his house in Quincy. Mac was a great baseball man, as a Player, Coach, Instructor and Scout. I will miss him. Walter Hriniak

To the family of Dick. I lived in Wollaston not far from Dick. He was a good friend of my brother's, Bob Beaton, who graduated from Archie's with him. My brother died of cancer 3 years ago. Dick was a real gentleman, even when he was a young man. My condolences to his family and friends.
