Mark Thompson Obituary

Mark James Thompson

ROEBUCK, SC-- On March 10, 2018, Mr. Mark James Thompson passed into eternal rest after a car accident. He was survived by his sisters Teresa, Angela, and Melissa, and his brother Christopher. He had three surviving children: Tanya, Michael, and Andrew. Andrew and his wife Susan are the parents of his four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, to whom he was married on June 6, 1969, and a son, James Edmund.
Born in 1941, Mark Thompson was a well-educated man who dedicated himself to his Catholic faith, his family, and a lifetime of serving others. A 1961 graduate of St. Bernard's College in Cullman, Alabama, he went on to earn further degrees from the University of Puerto Rico, Clemson University, and Limestone College.
After a period of government service in the Washington, DC area, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, and served for five years. After his time in the Public Health Service, he transitioned to a career in teaching that lasted more than twenty-five years. He taught in Anderson and Spartanburg Counties, eventually retiring from his position as an instructor of economics and government at Paul M. Dorman High School in 1997. After retiring from teaching, he spent six years as a District Executive for the Palmetto Council, Boy Scouts of America, serving Union and Cherokee Counties.
Throughout his life, Mark took leadership roles on the boards of many charitable and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the board of the Spartanburg County Public Library, the Spartanburg County Eagle Board (BSA), the Spartanburg Chapter of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, and the finance committee of Catholic Church of Jesus, Our Risen Savior. His past public service leadership roles include his membership of the Spartanburg County Selective Service Board, and his past service as a Blue and Gold Officer for the U. S. Naval Academy.
Mark also served as a volunteer and supporter for many other service organizations, too numerous to fully list here. Some of these are the Spartanburg Chapter of The American Red Cross, the Spartanburg Amateur Radio Club, the Spartanburg Stamp Club, the Knights of Columbus, the South Carolinians for Efficient Government, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Old Friends Club, and The Navy Blue and Gold Trivia Team. Mark was known for his persistence and for his lively personality. Many will miss his quick wit, sharp intellect, and kind heart.

To Tanya, Michael, and Andrew, May our Lord and Our Lady encamp around you at this time of your loss. We esteemed Mark very much and deeply appreciated his friendship. Although we didn't see him all the time, we always reminisced the old days. And, when we did see him it was like we never stopped our "family" visits. We will miss him much. Mark was one of those people who made the world a better place. We love you all, you will be in our prayers continually.

To Michael, Tanya, Andrew and family, Mark was a kind, and good friend to us. Always caring to ask how we were and how we were doing in our studies. Always showed concern for others. Selfless person he was. May you all take comfort in the fact that he will still watch over you, just from a better place You are all in my prayers and may the consolation of the Holy Spirit be upon you.
