So shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. He was a beloved professor, advisor, and friend at Brevard College. I attended Wofford College because of his advice. I thought of him often after losing touch. He was a generous, gentle, compassionate man. I am so sorry for your loss.

Gene was one of my closest friends at Wofford and at Yale Divinity School. We shared many late night conversations about serious subjects and many times of laughter as well. He is someone I had not been in touch with in recent years but a person I remember fondly. A dear friend and a great loss for me and the world.

So sad to hear this. I knew him in junior high school and went to a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert with him in the 9th grade. He was a sweet, sweet man.

Cathy and family, so very sorry to hear this news. Gene was always so good to me back at All Souls when I was transitioning to the Episcopal Church. A kind and gentle soul.

Gene was a dear friend and mentor for many summers at Camp Green Cove. Gene lit up the room with his sense of humor and words of wisdom. He will be missed.

We became friends working at Camp Mondamin for much of the 70's. I am most grateful for our time on the trail, on a rock, sharing a campfire. Of all his wonderful qualities I enjoyed most his sense of humor. I loved his laughter! Thank you Gene. Until the next campfire...

Cathy, My heart is heavy with the loss of Gene. I have know of Gene most of my 20+ years here in Shelby. I developed a much greater respect and love for him while he served on the hospital board. He always had a smile and handshake or hug; a kind word with a grateful heart for anything that was given or provided to him. He would go out of his way to say "thanks". My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you move forward. Love to all of you! We miss you in NC! Godspeed!

My thoughts and prayers extend out to my sister Cathy and niece Becca (and Ben) and to the enire parish community there on beautiful Nantucket.
I have had the privilege of knowing Gene for the past 28 years when he joined our family as he and Cathy married. Gene had a wonderful sense of humor, grounded in his faith and relished in the beauty of nature through hikes, mountain climbs, runs, horses, biking and canoeing.
I was able to spend a few quality days with Cathy & Gene last month and admired his courage and determination and outlook on life.
I pray for the repose of his soul, and that all that gather in Nantucket this weekend and his home in North Carolina are able to truely celebrate his wonderful spirit he graced us all with.

Don and I have loved both Kathy and Gene since we first met in the early 80's when St Clare's Episcopal Church was still a mission church. His smile and compassionate spirit will remain with us forever. To Kathy and Becca we send our love and prayers.

I will pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. McDowell. My father, The Rev. Bradford Johnson, was one of his predecessors as rector of St. Paul's (1949-1972). Fr. Phillips B. Johnson, St. Aidan's, Des Moines, IA

Gene was goodness personified (much like Santa- see Gene in this picture). My heart is heavy with sadness; I will miss him very much. However, I am deeply grateful for the time he was with us at St. Paul's Riverside. Thanks, Gene for passing our way...

First, I am so very sorry for your loss. I knew Gene and his father when I was in high school, and even then it was clear that he was a special young man. We lost touch after that time, but I am not surprised that he grew to be such a wonderful, loving and much beloved man. Thank you for letting those of us here in Spartanburg know. Many of us here will hold you all in our prayers.

My parents and the McDowells lived in the same apartment house in Spartanburg when Gene and I were born, just a few weeks apart. They remained friends until their deaths. Gene and I were in school together and I knew him my entire life. As our lives progressed we lost touch but through my parents I knew he grew to be such a fine man. It grieves me to read of his passing. As the word has spread, all of his childhood friends and classmates are so sad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Mary Fulton Campbell
