Virginia Pittman Obituary

PITTMAN,
Virginia L. "Ginny"
(Age 86)

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at her home in Spokane. Ginny was born July 19, 1924 to Al and Jo Teal in Walla Walla, Washington. She attended school at Clyde until moving to Whitman County in 1936. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1942 and went on to graduate from the Deaconess School of Nursing in 1946. She worked as a registered nurse at the Bryant and Wiseman clinic, St. Ignatius Hospital and Whitman Community Hospital all in Colfax. She retired from nursing in 1971.
She and Jack Pittman were married March 21, 1948 at Colfax. They had just recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. They farmed in the Mockonema area from 1961 until 1997 when they retired from farming. They moved to Hill-Ray Plaza in Colfax in 2008 and recently completed a move to Spokane. Ginny is survived by her husband Jack at their home in Spokane and three sons and their wives; Terry and Susie, Spokane; Scott and Rhonda, Colfax; Jeff and Tammy, Pasco. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Shelby Hennigar (Charly), Colfax; Tiffany Stanley, Spokane; Jeff Pittman, Colfax; Kara Powers (Andrew), West Richland; John Pittman, Ferndale; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Al.
Ginny was an avid reader and she served as president of the Friends of the Whitman County Library for many years. In 2010, Ginny received Friend of the Year honors from the Washington Library Association for her leadership and dedication to the Whitman County Library District. Among Ginny's accomplishments were huge increases in Friends' membership, two successful cookbook projects, expanded support for countywide programming, and a fundraising drive that brought in more than $130,000 for the renovation of the Colfax Library. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Washington State Grange. She was active in women's golf league in Colfax; was a wonderful cook and loved baking; and she enjoyed sewing and tole painting.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29 at 2:00 pm at the Colfax United Methodist Church with Pastor Lynn Nelson presiding. The family suggests memorials be made to the Friends of the Whitman County Library in Colfax. Dear Jack, Terry, Scott, Jeff and families, My sincere condolences to you all at the loss of Ginny. She and I enjoyed several years together in Athenaeum Club. I still make her famous dessert "Cherry Berry on a Cloud." She was a grand lady that I admired greatly. God Bless you all.
