Passed away May 6, 2011. Elsie (Koziuk) Thayer was born August 19, 1924 In Republic, WA to John and Anna (Hoffman) Koziuk. Elsie attended school in Republic until 5th grade when the family moved to Swiss Valley, west of Addy. She then attended schools in Chewelah and graduated from Jenkins High School in 1942. Elsie worked at Seafirst Bank in Colville, and later moved to Chewelah where she worked as City Treasurer. Elsie was elected Stevens County Treasurer in 1958 and retired in 1982. At that time she was an active member of the Stevens County Democratic Central Committee and served as Secretary several years. Other offices held include: President of Washington State Association of County Treasurers; President of Washington State Association of County Officials; President Elect National Association of County Treasurers (she retired a year before she would have taken office as president); and member and President Wash. State Business and Professional Women's Club. Elsie retired on the home ranch her parents acquired in 1939 on Chewelah's North Fork of the Chewelah Creek. She built a new home and after retirement Jan. 1, 1982 found solace in playing bridge, raising cattle and gardening. She maintained her interest and loyalty to local County, State and National Democratic organizations. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers Frank, Albert, Raymond and Paul. She is survived by sisters Elizabeth Thayer (Jack) of Clayton, WA, Frances Nord Williams (Don) of Spokane, Marguerite Borgert (Bill) of Edmonds, WA and Anna Mortensen (Keith) of Anchorage, AK. She was a beloved sister and Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Visitation and a Vigil Service will be held Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 14, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church, 502 E. Main St. Chewelah, WA. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery Spokane, WA.
