January 16, 2011, Mary Jacquelyn Mahar quietly passed away at Calloway Gardens in Kennewick, Washington. Jackie
suffered from Alzheimer's for 16 years. Her strength and zest for life and her faith in God kept her spirit alive as she battled this devastating disease.
Jackie was born in Everett, Washington but was brought up in Spokane Washington. She married John Monroe Gilbert on July 12, 1952 in Spokane. Jackie and John Lived in Salt Lake City from 1962 to 1970. During that time Jackie was involved with Altar Society at St. Francis Xavier in Kearns, Utah and eventually was elected president of the Altar Society. She was also President of the PTA at Monroe Elementary where her children went to Grade School. John passed away February 22, 1970 in Murray Utah, and Jackie and the children moved back to Spokane in the same year.
Jackie was employed with Chrysler Credit Corporation for over 20 years. Jackie married Robert Neil Mahar In 1972. Bob and Jackie were childhood friends and were classmates at St. Augustine Catholic School in Spokane. Joining the family with Bob were his four children which made for some lively family adventures.
Jackie was an avid golfer and loved playing bridge. She loved to cook and entertain. Bob and Jackie's lake cabin became the center of activity for family and friends for over 24 years. They loved to travel and enjoyed trips to many places including Hawaii, New York, Canada and the Panama Canal. Jackie will be remembered for her love of life and her sense of humor, her home made chocolate chip cookies, her sense of duty for her community, and her love for her family.
Jackie is survived by her brother, Mike Davis of Carson City, Nevada, her children, Deborah (Dennis) Marks of Kennewick, Washington, Robin (Andrew) Brncick of Turlock, California, Daniel Gilbert of Spokane, Washington, James (Jennifer) Gilbert of Portland, Oregon, Patricia (Bruce) Mills of Oakesdale, Washington, and Bill (Jenyce) Gilbert of Spokane, Washington, Bob Mahar's children, Jim (Sue) Mahar of Spokane, Washington, Meg (Gary) Ray of Issaquah, Washington, and Marilee Rush, of Montana. Jackie was blessed with eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by John M. Gilbert, Robert N. Mahar, her siblings Bill Davis, and Muriel McWilliams, and her stepson Michael Mahar. A Vigil Service will be held Thursday, January 20 at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 21 at 1:00pm at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, with a burial immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice in Jackie's name.
