Mary Leath Obituary

LEATH,
Mary Theresa

Our beautiful and spirited sister Mary passed away on February 11 in Melbourne, Florida. Mary was born on December 31, 1963 in Spokane to the late Arthur Leath and Dolores Leath (nee Thoreson). She attended St. Charles Parish and School and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1982. Mary had a thirst for adventure and fun, and left Spokane shortly after graduating to attend nursing school in Tacoma, WA. After earning her LPN, she joined the Air Force as a medic. Her travels took her to the Philippines, where she narrowly escaped the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. She was ultimately stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida and loved the warmth and sunshine so much that she made Florida her home. Mary earned her RN after leaving the Air Force and worked for most of her career as an emergency department nurse.

To everyone outside of her friends and family in Spokane, Mary was known as "Teres." She forged her most meaningful and long-lasting friendships with her fellow nurses and a few kindred spirits, and was surrounded by the closest of these friends and her sister Chris when she died. Mary cherished her friends, her career, and her home in Indialantic, where she loved nothing better than to "grill out" and share a bottle of wine with friends on her patio.

Unfortunately, Mary's life was overshadowed by cancer. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma as an adolescent and with breast cancer in late 2003. She not only survived both diagnoses, but thrived and refused to let her spirit be subdued by the difficulties she faced. She was a fighter and a force of nature-" intelligent, witty, fearless, scrappy, and loving. She was taken from us far too soon and unexpectedly, her strong life force extinguished in the end by another bout with cancer.

Mary is survived by the family that she loved above all else in her life-" her three siblings, David Leath (and wife Lorie) of Davenport, WA., Paul Leath (and wife Mary and son Adam) of Spokane Valley, WA., and Christine Leath (and husband John) of Hillsboro, OR. She is also survived by her many beloved cousins and aunts and uncles, and her childhood friends whom she considered family. We miss you Mary-" may you be at peace with Mom and Dad now.

Please join us in a celebration of Mary's life in Spokane on March 26, 2011, at Arbor Crest Wine Cellars at 5:30 p.m. (4705 N. Fruit Hill Road, Spokane WA 99217: 509.927.9463). For her friends in Florida who are unable to attend, raise a glass of Chardonnay to Teres in honor of her life and love.

I still think about Teres everytime I ride my bicycle behind the Walgreens store in Indialantic. I use to look to see if her back french doors were open, if they were then I knew there was a good chance she was outside on the patio.

Thank you for posting Teres' story. She was taken far too early. I had the opportunity to work with her at 2 different facilities in Florida and enjoyed knowing her. She could be so outgoing and so private while battling her cancer, but yes she was a definite fighter. I hope that you rest in peace Teres as you watch over your family and friends who loved you.

I love and miss you my friend. Thank you for always opening your door and your heart at a moments notice. You were at the same time strong and fragile, tough and tender, serious and silly. I am happy you are at peace now.

Any time I see red shoes, I will think of you. Many patients and nurses will never know the compassion and silliness you brought to our hectic environment.
