Monte Benzel Obituary

BENZEL, Monte
(Age 54)

Passed away January 31, 2011 at his home in Ritzville. Monte was born on February 17, 1956 in Spokane to Melvin and Joy Benzel. He was confirmed and baptized on March 22, 1970 at the Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville, where he was a member. Monte graduated from Ritzville High School in 1974 and went on to attend Spokane Community College. Following college, Monte returned to Ritzville where he resided until his death. He did farm work for his father and worked part time at Marcellus Grange Fertilizer Supply. Later, Monte continued to work for various farmers in the community where he enjoyed driving combines and tractors. Monte shared his humor, contagious laughter and cheerfulness with all. His family and friends were a lifelong support and joy to Monte. He had many interests and loved motorcycle rides and snowmobile trips. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed watching movies and followed politics. Monte's compassionate spirit was demonstrated by his sponsorship of children living in Brazil. Later in life, Monte was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy which eventually restricted him to an electric wheelchair. Monte fought his disease gallantly without complaint, never wanting sympathy and remained living by himself in his own home. He was comforted by his constant companion, a kitten named Fritz, and countless phone calls and visits from many friends and family. Monte was grateful for the assistance from Dr. Sackmann, Mary, family and friends. Monte was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his stepmother Toni Benzel, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Private services will be held for close friends and family. Memorial contributions can be made to American Diabetes Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association, or the memorial of your choice. DANEKAS FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY-Ritzville is entrusted with arrangements.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Monte's passing. I was a close friend of Monte, and share hundreds of memories from growing up in Ritzville. Monte was a favorite friend, for a few of us, in the class of 74. Monte's zest for life was unsurpassed in those days, his sense of humor and friendship was very special. In his latter years even hindered with muscular dystrophy, Monte's spirit was still strong. I already miss the calls from Monte, giving me updates on how the wheat was doing, and what particular sports story was giving him coniption fits, or how Fritz was acting crazy. I always used to tease him with this story....we were in our late teens...he kept bugging me to drive my mustang, I would always say no, finally on our way to Williams lake, were Monte's family had a cabin, I let him pilot the mustang, as he shifted through the gears, just happy as a clam to put the pedal to the metal, the motor blew up and we came to a stop under the shade of a big tree. The look on Mont's face when the car rolled to a stop and he looked at me, was priceless.... Monte, I will never forget the frendship we had, may you rest in peace...

I'm one of many of Mont's friends from Lind. I have many memories of Mont, mostly of good times we had during the 70's. Mont had a ton of friends and will always be remembered for his sense of humor and geniune kindness. I am sorry to have missed Mont's memorial due to a death in my wife's family.
