Richard Garinger Obituary

GARINGER,
Richard E.
1922-2011

Richard passed away peacefully in Spokane, WA on April 18, 2011 at the age of 88. Born in Salina, Kansas on September 6, 1922, Richard's family moved often in his younger years due to his father's job. Dad said he lived in every state west of the Mississippi before moving to Pateros, WA after his parents divorced in 1934. Richard served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. After basic training he was sent to England for the duration of WWII. He met and married Margaret C. Flynn in October, 1945 in Wenatchee, WA. He worked in the local orchards around Wenatchee before being hired by the Great Northern Railroad as a carman. In 1956 he took a transfer to Spokane and retired from Burlington Northern in 1987. Always doing his own electrical and construction work, Richard added a garage and patio to their home in Spokane and in retirement he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering and puttering around the house, visits from children and grandchildren and steelhead fishing and trailer camping with Margaret. Richard was preceded in death by Margaret, his beloved wife of 54 years, his older brother Clifford and his special friend Maybelle Schmidt. Surviving are his daughters Pamela (Brad) Tubbs of Edmonds, WA and Nova Bleckwenn of Cocolalla, ID; his son Nicholas (Diane) Garinger of Spanaway, WA; sisters Bette Williams of Pateros, WA and Carol Lee Garinger of Shoreline, WA; brother Dean H. Garinger of Spokane; grandchildren Greg (Kim) Tubbs of Marysville, WA, Jennifer (Tim) Minear of Lake Stevens, WA, Laya Bleckwenn, Cody Bleckwenn of Cocolalla, ID, Meagan Barron, Courtney, Emily and Kaitlyn Garinger of Spanaway, WA and four great-grandchildren, Corinne and Kyle Tubbs, Mason Minear and Maggie Bleckwenn along with many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends. The family thanks the caregivers at Regency at Northpointe for taking his stubborn gruffness, jokes and teasing while giving him outstanding care and compassion during his time living there. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association. A service and interment will be Saturday at 1:00pm, April 30, 2011 at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wenatchee, WA.
