Roy Dahl Obituary

DAHL,
Roy E. Jr.
November 7, 1930 -
March 19, 2011

Roy had an incredible journey. He died peacefully, living a rich life filled with many gifts. Born to Mary Edith Ryan and Roy Edwin Dahl he grew up in Spokane. He attended Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, ROTC commission and was captain of the golf team. He served with the 1st Armored Division in the Korean War. Roy married his soul mate, Carol Hein, in December 1953. They raised four children in Richland enjoying boating, water skiing, golfing, cards and games. In his lifelong quest for knowledge Roy received his M.S. in Nuclear Physics from the University of Washington, a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State, and achieved certification as a Professional Engineer in Nuclear Engineering. He had a remarkable 33 year career at the Hanford nuclear site followed by a diplomatic post with the United Nations in Vienna, Austria working on nuclear non-proliferation. This post with the International Atomic Energy Agency was a special time in his life. Roy and Carol loved living in Vienna and honeymooning all over Europe. They returned from Vienna settling in Spokane where he enjoyed family, golf, tennis, traveling and reading. Roy continued to pursue the foundation of his life, religion. He became a Deacon for the Catholic Church serving the Spokane Diocese. This experience allowed him to share his deep faith, intelligence and love with many people while enriching his own life. Family was Roy's pride and joy. He and Carol had a lifelong love affair that was inspirational. Roy leaves behind his wife, Carol of 57 years; children Karen (Paul) Green, Mike (Judi) Dahl, Barbara (Bill) Hanson, and Susan Dahl; grandsons Nick Farline, Ryan and Eric Dahl, Roy and Jon Hanson, and George Dahl Fearing; and a large extended family. This list does not cover all the people who will mourn his loss as he touched many people's lives with his genuine love and kindness. Special thanks to his doctors and the staff at Sacred Heart Medical Center for their support and skill helping Roy with his cancer battle. Roy's life will be celebrated with a Vigil Service on March 23, 2011 at 7 PM, with visitation beginning at 5pm at St. Peter Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 11 AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, address below. To Roy Dahl's family,
We've known Deacon Roy since we joined St. Peter's Parish five years ago. We were always so struck by both his knowledge and his dedication to his faith and his Church. Knowing what we did about his professional career strengthened our belief that there truly can be a balance between religion and science. We always took away so much meaning from his homilies, and could so easily relate to the experiences he shared with us, and the inspired messages he delivered. His earthly presence will be deeply missed. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity of getting to know him.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of you.

Dear Carol and family,

I treaure the wonderful memories of our families vacationing together at Lake Couer D'Alene and being neighbors for many years. I loved Roy's laugh and his fun spirit as we played for hours in the water at the lake. Your family will always be a very special part of my childhood memories. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.

I love you all,

Dear Carol and family,
The world has lost a bright shining star! Roy was one of the most "gentle" of men and he will be greatly missed. Please know that you are in our prayers. We are out of town and won't be there for Roy's services but know that we will be there in spirit.
Sincerely,
Bob and Maureen O'Brien
