Ruth passed away on April 10, 2011 at Valley General Hospital. She was born in Spangle, WA on November 24, 1924 to Harry E. Hill and Verna Spangle Hill and was raised there. She is also a descendent of William Spangle who helped form the Township of Spangle, WA. Ruth graduated from Spangle High School in 1942 where she was active in drama and band where she played the violin. She spent many hours working and cooking for the men at harvest time. Ruth moved to Spokane Valley in 1960, and became the manager of the kitchen at Havermale Junior High. Later she went on to help open and manage the cafeteria at the first K-Mart to come to Spokane on Sprague Avenue. She then went on to become a Bookkeeper for Joe K. Staley Oil Company in Greenacres then retiring from consolidation Irrigation District as their Bookkeeper. Ruth had two children; Gloria Hengen-Vail of Rockford, WA and Gregory John Hengen deceased in March of 1973. Three grandchildren; Greg Vail, Rockford, WA, Erin Brewer and husband James; great granddaughter Peyton Brewer and Janel Bingman, husband and family, Keith, Amber and Michael of Clarkston, WA.
Ruth stayed active in many organizations such as Past Noble Grand, Spangle Rebecca Lodge-Past Matron, Magnolia Chapter O.E.S. Millwood, WA, Bandito's Club for the Shriners. Her favorite hobbies were cooking, crafts and crocheting. She crocheted numerous afghans over the years and later in life did volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital in Spokane. Ruth crocheted 22 lap blankets and donated them to the Veterans there. Ruth also leaves behind a brother; Elton Hill, wife Diane of Malden, WA. Sisters; Betty May Fulton, Velma Marion, Billie Bentley who are deceased.
At her request no services will be held. She will be taken back home and placed on the Family Plot at the Spangle Cemetery in Spangle, WA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210-2472. At this time the family would like to take the time to thank all the friends and family for their support, and a thanks to the doctors and nurses that helped take care of her through her final days. Ruth is now at rest.
