Mr. C was so real. He accepted and enjoyed all of his students for who they were. He helped so many of us see things in ourselves we would never have appreciated without him. I'll always remember him for his humor and for treating us all as valued human beings.

During the bleakest years of my life, Mr. C. made my life worth living by making me realize that I was worth something while at NEHI. He is a special man who will forever live in my heart. I send my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Bob was a long time customer and friend. He always brought a smile to my face when he walked through the door of my barber shop. His joy of life, talent and generosity of spirit will be missed in this community. Nelson, may the memories of many years shared be a band aid for your heart.

Truly a life well lived. Those of us who were privileged to be students in speech and drama at NEHI ('62-'64), will cherish the memories forever. Particularly the work and rewards of the arena productions. Mr. “C” was one of my favorite teachers. (My son is named after him.) He was a dear friend over the years and I will miss my Christmas and birthday notes. The world is a better place because he was here for 91 years. Be at peace Mr. “C”. Love and prayers to Nels.

Mr Challener was a gift to NEHI, in the late 60's, Mr. C. was able to see the gift in each student and gave us the praise we needed to feel confident. His speech and drama class at NEHI are one of my greatest memories.

His love of teaching and his love for the arts was displayed by his many philanthropic gifts to Ruth Eckerd Hall and The Florida Orchestra. I was saddened to read of the death of Mr. C this morning in the paper. I often think about teachers I had during my school years, and always -- always, Robert Challener comes out on the top. In 1967 when I arrived at Northeast, I felt very lost, but when I got to speech class I knew I was going to be okay. I am so grateful for the wonderful memories. Blessings on you Nelson as you go forward without your wonderful partner. Richard Turley, NEHI 1968

Although I never had Mr. Challener as a teacher, my mother did. And obviously he made quite an impact, because she named me after him. I did have the chance to meet him once, when we went back for her 25th reunion. I remember him as an exceptionally kind and funny man.

Mr. Challener was indeed a class act. What wonderful memories I have of drama class. He was funny, instructive and way ahead of his time. I so enjoyed being in the plays he directed. He was one everyone's favorite at Northeast High. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Mr. "C" directed the first musical NEHS ever attempted. The Drama Dept joined forces with the chorus and we put on "Annie Get Your Gun" starring Joan Dodge & George Marks, from class of 1959. Over 50 years later It is still a fond memory. What an innovative and classy man he was. He was a favorite teacher and a true role model for so many. Rest in peace, dear friend. Robert Challener inspired me to become a Speech and English teacher. I "borrowed" many of his wonderful techniques to help students find an interesting topic and get up before the class and speak about it; it ALWAYS worked, even with the shy or reluctant. I also used Mr. Challener's techniques when my students performed plays. He offered to let me drive his MG TD sports car at Northeast High, St. Petersburg, and taught us all in drama how to sell the dialogue and action of a play. Everyone on stage singing "There's No Business Like Show Business" at the end of "Annie Get Your Gun" was a highly fulfilling moment for us all. He also wrote "Dandruff in My Eyebrows" in 1972. Amazon has one copy for 49 dollars. It's about him starting out in acting in New York on a shoestring, in a cold water small apartment.
I have thought about him regularly every month the last 51 years since I was in his class. Rest in peace in Heaven Mr. Challener, but you're not dead here.

My mentor and friend. The toughest teacher I have ever had. He believed it was a privelege to be on the stage and I have carried that direction with me for many years. I will miss you Mr. 'C' even though I haven't seen you since the Baldwins. May the Angels greet you with open arms. Bridget Sumner Roney

I had Mr. Challener for a speech teacher at Northeast High School in 1965. He changed my life. His ability to instill self confidence and organization in thought and speaking was a lesson well learned. I am honored to have been one of his many appreciative students.
