Charles Harris Obituary

HARRIS, Charles C. 80, of Belleair, passed away on Monday, May 9th at his daughter's home in Alachua. Chuck was born in Euclid, OH on July 15, 1930 to the late Alfred S. Harris, Sr. and Marie G. Harris (Barkley). In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred S. Harris, Jr.; sister, Josephine H. Williams and stepfather, John W. Barkley. Chuck graduated from University School in Shaker Heights, OH and Williams College in Williamstown, MA. He was an avid sportsman, particularly enjoying sailing and golf. He was past Commodore of Clearwater Yacht Club, Florida Ocean Racing Association and Windjammers of Clearwater and a former board member of Pioneer Western Corporation, Western Reserve Life Assurance, and Morton Plant Mease Foundation. After retiring, his greatest joy was traveling the country in his motor coach with his beloved wife, Em, visiting historic sites, family and friends. Chuck, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Em) A. Harris; four daughters, Christine M. Harris of Christiansburg, VA, Lyn H. Dinkmeyer and husband, Jim of Parkland, FL, Robin H. Olmstead and husband, Norman of Blacksburg, VA, Tinker H. Tindley and husband, Ben of Alachua; son, Charles S. Harris and wife, Cheryl of Clearwater Beach; eight grandchildren, Chad Olmstead and wife, Christina, Matt Olmstead and wife, Susan, Carly Olmstead, Drew Dinkmeyer, Caitlin Dinkmeyer, Jessica Tindley, Chase Tindley, and Rachel Lay and husband, Zack; four great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and special friends. Family and friends will greatly miss his caring nature, integrity, wonderful sense of humor and zest for life. The family would like to express its appreciation to Dr. William Mendenhall, Dr. Anthony Mancuso and Haven Hospice of Florida for their care and support during his last months. Memorial gifts may be made in Chuck's honor to Haven Hospice, 4200 N.W. 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32606 or the American Cancer Society. A gathering in celebration of Chuck's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Westarea 823 NW 143RD ST. 352-376-7556
