John "Fred" Dugan
May 12, 1933 - March 3, 2018
John "Fred" Dugan, passed away peacefully at home in Sarasota, FL on March 3, 2018. Born May 12, 1933 in Stamford, CT, he was the son of Marion Bouton Dugan and Edward Dugan. He is predeceased by his parents, his son John Dugan, his brothers Edward (Noreen), David (Sara), Donald (Ducky) Dugan, George (Nina) and his brother-in-law Richard Hansen. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Caputo Dugan, his daughters, Dana Dugan of Miramar, FL, (from a previous marriage), and Kelley Dugan of Stamford, CT, his sister Marylou Hansen of Sudbury, MA, his daughter-in-law Nancy Dugan of Clinton, CT, and his three grandsons Ryan Dugan of Nashville, TN, Colin Dugan and his wife Elizabeth of Old Saybrook, CT, as well as Keith Dugan of Clinton, CT, and two great grandchildren, Jack and Isla Dugan. He also has many nieces and nephews.
Fred, a graduate of Stamford High School, played college football at the University of Alabama and the University of Dayton, where he was selected All-Midwest, All-Catholic and Sports Writers of America All-American, sponsored by Look Magazine and others. He was invited to New York with fellow All-Americans to appear on the Perry Como Show and invited to the East/West Shriners Game in San Francisco.
Fred went on to play professional football in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. During his professional career, he managed to break the All-time Redskins Pass-Receiving Record. During his time with the newly formed Cowboys, Fred led the team in receptions and was told that he scored the very first touchdown in Cowboy franchise history.
After retiring from the NFL, Fred owned a local bar/restaurant called, The Huddle. He went on to work as General Foreman of Highways for the City of Stamford, until he and his wife, Liz, retired to Sarasota, FL.
Although Fred had received many honors over the years through sports, the thing he was most proud of were his children.
Family will receive relatives and friends at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford on Monday, March 12 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. There will a mass on Tuesday at St. Bridget of Ireland Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Ave, in Stamford at 10:00 a.m.. His interment will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery, 25 Camp Ave., Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Fred's memory to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238

It's been a year and Fred you are still truly missed and loved. You would be so proud of Elizabeth and Kelley.
I'm sorry Liz and Kelley that I haven't been able to be there as much because of things happening with me. Fred would be proud of both of you for how you have handled everything since his death. Know I love you all and you are always in my prayers. Love you both.
Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you all today and always.

Sad to hear of Fred's passing. I have fond memories of him, working with the city but mostly visiting him at the Huddle after my 3-11 shift. Fine gentlemen! Praying for him and for you, his family, as you mourn your loss.
