Hoby Rosen Obituary

Rosen, Hoby
We are sad to report that Hobart (Hoby) Rosen, of Stamford, CT, died June 19, 2014 at the age of 89.
Hoby grew up in Baltimore, began college at Johns Hopkins University and graduated from USC, with World War II intervening; as a 19-year- old infantryman, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He met Norma Lipman, courtesy of his cousin, Betty Lipsitz Rout (Norma's roommate at Duke), and romanced her through letters while convalescing in a hospital in England. They were married during a New York City blizzard in 1948.
Hoby began his working life in the film business and then hit his stride as the co-founder and co-director of Point O'Pines Camp for Girls in the Adirondacks. Former campers and staff members remember Hoby and the impact he had on their lives with reverence: "an amazing role model for all of us;" "I will forever be grateful to him for my magical summers, lifelong friendships, and for helping to shape the person I am;" "I never knew anyone who could pull off such stern looks with so much love behind them."
Renaissance Man that he was, after retiring from the camp business, Hoby focused primarily on his work as an award-winning sculptor. He also was an accomplished poet and photographer. One of his sculptures is on display at Stamford Hospital's Tully Health Center.
There are very few people who were not charmed by Hoby, as he displayed a keen intellect, a dry sense of humor, and a strong interest in others, while being a most interesting guy himself. He was a born raconteur, loved striking up conversations with strangers, and was especially drawn to children.
Hoby is survived by his son, Andy Rosen (Paula), daughter, Julie Bowman (Tom), and companion, Sandy Semel, along with 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma, and his daughter, Emily.
A private funeral was held on May 23, 2014. A memorial service/celebration will be held on Sunday, June 8th at 2 PM at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich in Old Greenwich, CT.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Horizons Student Enrichment Program (http://horizonskids.org/) are welcome. A long-time volunteer at the Horizons Art Happening event, Hoby derived great satisfaction in sharing his love of sculpture with the children and staff.

A piece of Hoby is in so many women I know and love. He helped them to reach their potential with a rare combination of fun, encouragement and structure. none of that would have been possible without Hoby and Norma. The best childhood days for most of those women, generally, and for me, specifically, were our days at Point O' Pines, the camp of our dreams. Hoby, thank you for everything you did to make that dream come true for so many girls. xo

Hoby, out of the American Southwest you plucked me to come teach and coach tennis at your magical camp in the Adirondack Mts. What an experience, what a mentor! Your guidance, gentle sternness, enthusiasm, esprit de corps, insistence on good manners and wry humor taught thousands of girls important life lessons. I will never forget the countless hours of tennis during POP rest hours and your enthusiasm for a life well-lived. Thank you! On you go, Hoby, on you go!

In our rush to get his story posted quickly, we listed the date of passing as June 19 instead of the correct May 19! Wishful thinking perhaps?

Because of these brave men who went off to war at such a young age many know freedom. You now go on to be with your comrades in arms.Thank you for your service.
