William C. Weitzel, Jr., age 78, a resident of Cornish, New Hampshire, passed away on January 20, 2014 after a long ten year battle with cancer. Mr. Weitzel was a partner of the law firm of Cummings and Lockwood and a retired Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Texaco, Inc.
Born February 6, 1935 in Washington, D. C. to Pauline and William C. Weitzel, Bill Weitzel graduated with high honors from Harvard College in 1956 and from Harvard Law School in 1959. After graduation, he served as a law clerk for a federal jurist. From 1960 through 1966, he was an Assistant U. S. Attorney in Washington D. C., where he was a federal prosecutor for many of that City's major criminal cases. In 1966 he joined Texaco Inc. and served as their lead litigation attorney until 1977 when he was named General Counsel of the Company. In 1984 he was appointed Senior Vice President of Texaco Inc. Bill was also President of the Texaco Philanthropic Foundation. He retired from Texaco in 1990, having served more than twelve years as General Counsel. Bill then joined the Connecticut law firm of Cummings and Lockwood. At his death, he was still a practicing attorney with Cummings and Lockwood and worked with the Board of Directors of W. R. Grace.
Bill Weitzel was very involved in the alumni affairs of Harvard College. For twenty years he was President of the Harvard Club of Fairfield County, Connecticut. He served as a Regional Director of the Harvard Alumni Association and was a member of the Harvard Club of New York. Bill was active in many organizations, which included being a past Trustee of The Center for American and International Law, a past member of the American Law Institute, a past President of Westchester / Fairfield (Counties) Corporate Counsel Association, a past Director of the Association of General Counsel, a past Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute's General Committee on Law, a past member of the Vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien, Connecticut, a past Trustee of the Forman School, a past member of the Advisory Committee of the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law at Columbia University and a past Trustee of Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire.
Bill Weitzel is survived by his loving wife, Loretta, of 35 years. He is also survived by a son, William C. Weitzel III and wife, Michelle; a son Richard S. Weitzel and wife, Christine and their two children, Nicole and Ryan; a daughter Sarah L. Farrell and her husband Richard, and their four children, Emma, Richie, Liam and Nora; and a son, Andrew K. Weitzel.
Calling hours will be Thursday January 23rd, 2014 11am to 1pm at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, NH.
A service will be held on Friday January 24th, 2014 at 9am, at the Plainfield Community Church in Plainfield, New Hampshire. Bill will be buried at the Chase Cemetery in Cornish, New Hampshire in the spring.
A memorial donation in Bill's honor may be made to your local Fire Department. (Bill's dad was an Assistant Fire Chief in Washington, D.C.)
