Ralph Guglielmi Obituary

RALPH VINCENT GUGLIELMI of Wallace, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2017. He was 83. Born in Columbus, Ohio on June 26, 1933, he was the only son to Italian immigrants Marino and Rose Guglielmi. Ralph made his mark in high school as an all around student athlete at Grandview High School in Columbus. After receiving more than a combined 100+ collegiate academic and athletic scholarship offers in baseball, basketball and football, he decided to attend the University of Notre Dame from 1951-1955. With Ralph as a starting player, the Fighting Irish went 26-3-2, finishing in the top 4 teams in the country every year of his attendance. In 1953 the team went 9-0-1, as Notre Dame's backfield included fullback Neil Worden and halfbacks Johnny Lattner and Joe Heap. After Ralph's junior year, the famous coach, Frank Leahy, proclaimed, Guglielmi as "the greatest quarterback I ever coached." Ralph went on to receive the unanimous nomination for the honor of All-American quarterback in 1954. In 1955 he was a member of the winning College All Stars team securing MVP honors, and the same year became the number one draft pick of the Washington Redskins. Not only did he play for the Redskins, but also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as playing football and becoming an officer for the US Air Force. On April 19, 2001, Guglielmi was inducted in the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame. After his NFL career, Ralph was a successful insurance agent as well as long time business owner of restaurants and car dealerships. He also developed a successful computer forms company, Computer Business Supplies (CBS). After many years as a resident and avid, almost daily golfer of the Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Maryland, Ralph and his wife retired to River Landing Golf Community in Wallace, North Carolina in 2003. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda Doeringer Guglielmi, his son, Ralph David Guglielmi and wife, Laurie Maves, his daughter, Lisa Marie Hofmann and husband, Mark Hofmann, five grandchildren, Ralph Vincent Guglielmi II, Michael Anthony Guglielmi, Isabella Marie Hofmann, Livianna Noelle Hofmann and Elena Claire Hofmann, brother-in-law, Jeffrey W. Doeringer and mother-in-law, Betty Z. Doeringer. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wallace, North Carolina, to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Rocky Mountain Leukemia And Lymphoma Society Chapter in his son's name, Ralph David Guglielmi, a two time cancer survivor. I just now learned about Ralph's passing in Blue &Gold ND magazine. I am truly sorry and my deepest sympathy to his family. I was so proud, being a fellow Italian, the way he ran the option with perhaps the greatest backfield ever assembled at Notre Dame; Lattner, Worden and Heap. Frank Leahy said Guglielmi was the greatest quarterback he ever coached. A tremendous tribute when you realize that he coached two Heisman winners Bertelli and Lujack previously. God bless you Ralph and as long as there is a ND you will always be a part of its glorious tradition.

So sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. He was a close friend of our family in the 50's and 60's. He worked for our company for a short time and we made Guglielmi salad dressing with his father and his lovely mother Rose. We would mix it in the basement of our company and label and package it to be sold in the local grocery stores. I can remember Ralph spending time at our house and passing the football with us as little kids. We will keep Ralph and your family in our prayers

Sincerely,
The Murphy Family

Ralph Guglielmi was my faovorite Notre Dame
football player when I played in high school. So much so that I copied the way
that he ran the triple/option at ND. I was
totally thrilled when I got a chance to play against him in an Old Timers' Game my
sophmore year at ND. What a charming and
unpretentious man he was inspite of all his
athletic and business accomplishments. I am
now 78 years old and he is still my hero.
My sincere condolences to the Guglielmi
family. What a man!! Donnie White ND60

Ralph was my first Notre Dame hero. I've been a fan since I was 8 years old in 1952. A nun (Sister Gracette) asked us 3rd graders at St Ephrem's School in Brooklyn NY to write a short essay on "A Hero I Admire". Even though we had great stars on my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers team,I wrote about Ralph. I got an "A" and a "gold star" A great player, and better man. My prayers are now for the repose of his soul.

I only met Mr. Ralph a couple times throughout my life, but knew him very well through my dad. I had the privilege and pleasure of spending a few days with him and that fabulous Notre Dame backfield about 10 years ago at an autograph signing session in Vegas. We had so many laughs. I know my dad greeted his long-time friend in heaven, and they are having a ball together! May you, his family, be blessed with feeling Mr. Ralph's presence in your more than his absence. God bless!

Ralph was a great guy, a straight shooter and fun to travel with as he seemed to know everybody. I join with probably many others in wishing the best to his wife Linda, his daughter Lisa I only knew as a little girl and Ralph David with whom I traded many a barb when we worked together.
