Benjamin Griggs Obituary

Griggs, Benjamin Glyde, Jr. passed away in Denver, CO on July 4, 2013 at 85 years of age. He was born in St. Paul, MN on May 16, 1928, the third of five children of Benjamin Glyde Griggs and Martha Baker Griggs. He was educated at St. Paul Academy, Class of 1946, and graduated from Yale University in 1950 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Sociology. He married Myra Clemans Macfarlane on August 13th, 1952, and they went on to raise four children together. Mr. Griggs spent his entire working life with Northwest Airlines. By 1961 he had become Assistant to the President, then was appointed Vice-President for Operations in 1964. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was Executive Vice-President, Operations - a position which oversaw groups comprising more than 10,000 employees. Mr. Griggs was a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Minneapolis as well as the Board of Directors of the St. Paul Companies. He also served on the boards of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of the St. Paul Area. Mr. Griggs was predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth Clark and Martha Drewry, and by his wife, Myra Clemans Macfarlane (Mimi) of Seattle, WA. He is survived by two sisters, Juliana Marty of San Mateo, CA, and Mary Wells Mack of Nevada City, CA, four children, Benjamin III (Ghada) of Yorba Linda, CA, David (Stella) of Denver, CO, Vikki Griggs-Demmin (Jeff) of Sonoma, CA, and Douglas (Beth) of Bayfield, WI, and ten grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Carmel, CA on July 27th at All Saints' Episcopal Church, with a burial at sea the following day. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Ben's memory be made to St. Paul Academy and Summit School, 1712 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105.
