Charles Nelson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31, 2010.
Nelson, Rev. Charles E. age 86, of Bloomington passed away 19 October 2010. Preceded in death by parents, Clarence O. & Daisy (Buell) Nelson, & siblings Marjorie, Jeanne, & Gordon. Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary (Sussex); children: Cynthia Nelson (David Gorg), Paul (Ann), and David (Kathy); grandchildren: Natalie Gorg & Casey Nelson; brother Wayne (Evelyn); sister-in-law Jane Nelson; brother-in-law Dr. Thomas Sussex & many nieces and nephews. After graduation from high school in his home town of Grand Forks, he spent three years in the Coast Guard. He graduated from University of North Dakota in 1951 and Boston University's School of Theology in 1955. Ordained in the Methodist Church, he served 40 years in active ministry. His first assignment was in Bryantville and West Duxbury, Mass. After moving to Minnesota in 1956 he served United Methodist churches in Farmington, Faribault, St. Paul (St. Anthony Park) and Worthington (First UMC). He was chaplain for the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington before he retired. Chuck was a seeker of truth, a friend to all, a fair, thoughtful and generous man who remembered the least of us. He was known for many things, including his deep curiosity about the world, his dry sense of humor, his earnest appreciation for the talents of others, and his belief that we are all part of one big family. Music, travel, sailing, art, theater, history, photography, baseball, hockey and golf were some of his passions. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa, and a popular uncle. He made friends easily, and kept them. Freely giving of his time and talent to numerous church and community organizations, he made a difference in the lives of many. He was a kind and faithful servant of God and we will greatly miss him. Memorial service Sat., Nov. 6, 11 AM at Portland Ave. United Methodist Church, 8000 So. Portland Ave., Bloomington. Visitation at church one hour prior to the service. Interment in Hope ND. Memorials preferred to Heartsprings Community Healing Ctr. in Fargo, PAUMC, UMCOR, or MPR.

Rev. Charles E Nelson my youth pastor many ancient years ago. Upon the passing of Rev. Billy Graham, I remembered you (not the first remembrance however). I miss singing at the rest homes even though they were tear jerkers. I miss the chocolate cokes at the Olympia and your fellowhip. I did not know that you had passed. I'm sorry I missed your memorial. Hope to rejoin you in heaven. Nancy

Please accept our sympathies. Chuck always had a kind word to say to us whenever we visited the Portland Avenue Church. I know he was a valued member of the congregation. Sincerely, The Mark Gaughan Family

I worked with"Chuck" when he was the Chaplin at the Masonic Home.He made the history of the Home come alive, by visiting Cemeteries
and the Historical Society and interviewing the Daughter of the first Administrator. Our museum was always a source of interest! And, oh how he and Mary loved to dance! I will miss him.

Heaven is blessed to have him in its presence. I remember him as my tall, tall, always smiling Uncle. Although we didn't spend much time together in later years, he is my inspiration in so many ways.
