Dear Betty,
I was very saddened to hear about the loss of Helmut. I have such nice memories of working in the office of MVUUF and seeing you and Helmut as you came in to the office as part of your many voluteer activities. Helmut was such a sweet and gentle man. I remember hearing stories about how he had been an extremely talented researcher and I also knew that he was a a very talented and still (in his 80's) active musician. It was very inspirational. Reading about his life and your life together is quite an amazing story. What a blessed life. I send you my thoughts of caring and I want you to know how deeply sorry I am for you and your family. Your graciousness is very admirable. I know you have many beautiful memories that will always be a part of you and a part of him within you. I wish you peace.

Dear Betty and Family Members:
I am very saddened concerning Helmut's recent death. You may recall that I was his violin teacher in Minneapolis in the mid 1970s. Helmut was a great companion and he loved the violin. He made such progress that three years later he joined the Unitarian Orchestra under my direction as well as the U of M Summer Orchestra. Five years ago I changed careers from music to the ministry. I am now the rabbi of the Jewish Reform congregation in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Please accept my deepest sympathy and empathy. May you all have strength and faith at this difficult time.

Dear Gutmann Family,
I remember playing in the BSO with Helmut. Since I only knew his first name initially, it was months or maybe even a couple of years before I found out he was Mike’s dad! Then he became Sandy’s father-in-law, of course. I’m sorry to hear of his passing. Betty and all of the extended Gutmann family will be in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time.
Love and Blessings,

Dear Betty,
I was very sorry to hear about Helmut. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of both of you, as two of the founders of MVUUF. I remember Helmut as a very gentle man with a lot of drive. I think of Helmut and Florence playing violin together whenever I hear a Bach violin concerto. I know that you and your family will miss him very much. I am thinking about you and your family during this extremely difficult time.

Betty, A day just wasn't complete until Helmut sang the Good Morning song to me and it may have even been five or six times a day but always welcome. He had my respect, admiration, and love. You were truly two of my favorite residents. Wishing you peace. Regina (former FV banker)

I was saddened to hear about Helmut. I will always remember him in my fitness classes. I never really knew how old he was, but he was in inspiration working out in classes with people far younger than he was. He will be missed.

I am so saddened to hear of Dr Gutmann's passing. Many years ago I worked at the VA Hospital in building 31, and remember him well. He was a dedicated investigator. He was a talented musician that I had the privilege to hear. He touched many lives in many ways with his many talents. May his memories always remain dear to you. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

Dear Betty & Family,
I was so privileged to be Helmut's Person Trainer for the last 5 months. He would often be playing the piano when I arrived. It would cheer me to hear these beautiful melodies as I approached his room. During our sessions he was so intent and put forth such good effort that it was sheer delight to work with him. I loved how he adored Betty and would tell me over and over how lucky he was that she was in his life. Despite dementia, Helmut was a passionate lover to the end ... passionate about his wife, his music, his interests, ... life! ... I am grateful for his example. Thank you, Helmut*

Betty, Ruth, David, Mike, and Becky - I am very sorry to hear of Helmut's death. I'm mentally going through more than 40 years of knowing you all: Christmas dinners eaten together; chatting at MVUUF coffee hour.... That's where Helmut once asked me if I was playing my cello much, and I said that I didn't find much time to do it. He gave me such a look - then mildly said something like "You can ALWAYS find time to play music." I hadn't seen him for several years, but will remember him with respect and fondness.
